WHAT CHANGES?
« on: 10 Nov 2008, 03:51 am »
hi Hugh, iwas wondering if i went with a trafo with the proper output voltages but had i bigger rating like say, 2.5kva, what would it do to the soraya or lf100? would it trash the power supply? possibly a stupid question but i am a bit curious.

it would take up all enclosure space :green:

Steven,

It would cost a lot of money and space, but would not improve sonics at all because there is 'spring' built in to the power supply anyway with decoupling resistors.  AND, it would increase the charge surge current, which might actually degrade sonics because of intermodulation with the earth return current from the voice coil.

You need to keep charge surge current moderate.  Too much and it overstrains rectifiers and filter caps, and causes intermodulation.  It is, in my view, the charge surge current which causes most of the issues rather than any fluctuation in the supply voltage.

The best course is the middle course..... but there are palpable advantages in separate trafos and bridges for each channel.  Cross talk really damages imaging.

Cheers,

Hugh
