Cheap Dynamat Substitute

So you want to Dynamat your speaker cabinets, woofer baskets, component chassis, etc. but fainted when you saw the price of a box of Dynamat.  Check this stuff out at Home Depot.

$16.45 for a 25 foot by 8 inch roll.  Same stuff as Dynamat as far as I can tell.

Looking for neoprene/cork component isolators like the ones from Mapleshade?

I love the quote: "Call us, we'll cut a special size to slip under a pool pump, etc!"

How about cutting one for an amp or turntable?

The only problem that I see with that roofing material is the smell of tar.  Dynamat does not have smell.  Choose wisely.

Cheers!

I'd also urge caution on the soundproofing... I've heard rumors of some stuff melting or the adhesive failing in automotive applications. That said, I'm sure dynamat is marked up quite a bit, and it may be exactly the same product as Russ posted. Might be a good idea to search or post in an auto sound forum to see what's popular. I used to own a small auto / fabrication shop, and I did stereo installs or fix botched installs occasionally, but it's been a long time. The last product I used was from Elemental Designs:

I just gave the roof stuff the sniff test, and I can smell a slight tar scent with my nose right up to the surface, otherwise no odor.  You'd have to pretty scent sensitive for the stuff to both you.

I've used it inside speaker cabinets and CD player lids so not much concern about temperature extremes there.  The stuff will likely soften at high temperatures so you wouldn't want to use it on or near heat sinks, transformers, or tubes.  But you wouldn't use Dynamat for that either.
