Title: Good strong adhesive for foam to metal???
Post by: jriggy on 5 Nov 2014, 02:36 pm
I was debating on putting this in the Acoustics Circle but figured this might be a better place...

I am looking for a good and solid adhesive, spray or paste or other, that can adhere some Auralex acoustic foam to the inside of a rectangle metal air return duct...

What I am needing to do is quiet a large air return vent to the HVAC, that is on the hallway wall, up at the ceiling, outside my office door at home. I had a knowledgeable HVAC guy come and check out the system, for various things, I pointed this out to him, he checked the system for proper air-flow first and said I could adhere a section of foam to the end/top and backside of the metal vent path to quiet down the velocity noise I hear at my desk. He said this will not hamper airflow if I keep the foam piece to a certain size and dimension we discussed.

So I need a good solid hold adhesive that will not break down and cause the foam to fall down the return vent... Any product suggestions?

Thanks
 Jason

PL Premium

Comes in a caulk tube

Will stick almost anything to almost anything

Clean surfaces first (dust)

It's permanent

If you get it on you, it has to wear off

Use disposable gloves

'Nuff said

Be careful using any old adhesive for foam. Most adhesives have solvent in them that will melt the foam, and cause a mess. Look for adhesives that are designed for foams. They adhere very well, and don' melt the foam.

Good Luck,

What kind of foam?  White?  Pink/blue?  That's a factor.  Maybe just spray a rubber-like heavy material to deaden the noise.

That PL adhesive i my go-to choice for all kinds of stuff.   :thumb:

A common adhesive used in the HVAC industry is the Nashua 345 spray adhesive.  Not sure if it is compatible with foam though, it is usually used with fiberglass duct liner.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Thunderbrick,
The foam is a standard Auralex acoustic foam I have, in the form of purple pyramid spike sheets --like egg crate foam.

I guess I could test the adhesive for compatibility issues with the acoustic foam...
I am just afraid that adhesive generally used for these standard acoustic foam panels will not be strong enough over time and will fall off.
