EL34 & 6L6 characteristics
« on: 4 Jun 2020, 01:23 am »
I finally got my garage sale tubes tested out , thanks bigshutterbug !
I rolled in some EH 6L6's in place of my EH EL34's to compare . About as close to apples-to-apples as I can get .

I am asking if there is a tube that combines the characteristics of these two tubes ?
I like the warmth , body and bass of the EL34's and the top end , detail and air of the 6L6's . Is there something that would have all of these characteristics in one tube ?
Yes , I want it all !

Thank you

You could try listen 6CA7 or KT66.
Bass depends on the OPT size also.

Look at the 807/1625 tube.  They are similar to the 6L6, but they have more overall power.  The tubes have excellent overall performance, with good bass, lifelike mids, and extended treble.

I am always amazed at the "opinions" with, apparently, no knowledge of the circuit in which a particular output tube is being utilized. Driver tubes often have more influence than power tubes. Architecture...SE, PSE, PP, negative feedback...so many variations that will impact the voicing of an amp, IMO, more than the output tube.  How 'bout Output Transfomers... coupling caps....??

Hopefully you get the picture.

I like "Fat"  Sylvania vintage tubes after 40 years of tube rolling 4 different amps.  GL KT 77s are also nice.  Took me a while to get a closely matched set of Sylvanias.

My favorite, but definitely an EL34 sound. I’d have to go with KT77 as the midpoint between EL34 and 6L6.

In terms of this class for new tubes, I like the Psvane EL34-PH and Shuguang Black Treasure 6CA7. For NOS, I like the Tesla EL34s (from what I've tried).

In my SEP circuit, the KT77 has more bass than the EL34 and the midrange is closer to the EL34 than anything I've tried. The 7581 has a more linear sound, similar but more 'body' than the 6L6. I would roll both in and see which you prefer.
