Reservation Dogs is a dark comedy about life on a Native American reservation in Oklahoma. The story follows four teenage friends and petty criminals navigating the gritty, dead end life of growing up on the Rez. The film accurately portrays reservation life while avoiding the usual Hollywood native American clichés.

Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Jojo Rabbit), the series is unique because the writers, directors and actors are entirely Indigenous. Sterlin Harjo is a founding member of the Native American comedy troupe "The 1491s". In an interview he says:
“We are making fun of non-Native audiences’ expectations while acknowledging aspects of that part of Native culture. We’re teasing the audience using the history of cinema. Native Americans grow up on pop culture — it’s how we learn what rest of the world is up to.”
Pop cultural references include homages to Quentin Tarantino's film “Reservoir Dogs”, Oliver Stone's "Platoon" and Hollywood's portrayal of the traditional native American warrior.
