D-200 - are they stable at 2 Ohm? Power rating?
« on: 31 Jan 2008, 04:37 pm »
Hi!

Ever since the D-200 came out I've been intrigued by it. But most of the information I've found is related to the D-100.

I know the D-100 is a powerhouse when driving 2 Ohm loads. I'm interested in an amp that can handle that load - MartinLogans may well be in my future.

Can the D-200 drive 2 Ohm? How much power can I expect out of it?

Good Bud of mine used the D-200's to drive M.L.CLS speakers with very good results.

From what I recall the D-200 has a beefier power supply than the D-100, otherwise both use the same UcD amp. Dusty?

The ability to drive Logans well was one of the reasons why I bought D-200s.

Thanks for all your answers.

What about power? If I understand correctly, the D-200 may put out the same amount of Watts as the D-100 at 2 Ohm, since they are current-limited... am I correct?

I thought the D100 uses UcD180, while the D200 uses UcD400 modules, no?

According to spec sheet ucd amps are load independent. although min recommended load impedance is 1 ohm.

D-200 produces more power at 2 ohms than D-100, but this doesn't really matter...the speaker is only around 2 ohms at high frequency. There are no problems running various ML models with either D-100 or D-200.

Both models are based on modifed UcD400 modules.

Thanks for the clarification Dusty.

I know Stereophile tested the D-100, and the results were pretty good - 100W at 8, 200W at 4, 300W at 2 Ohm. Does the D-200 scale like that?

D-200 will be around 400w @ 2 ohms...but you don't have a 2 ohm load
