Hi from New Brunswick, Canada

I have been looking st the XLS-Encore for quite some time and think I am ready to take on the task.

new user, so I cannot use the search feature.

I had thought I had seen a thread where Danny had plas for a front slot version.   with my room constraints a rear firing port will not work for me.

If you build the X-SLS version you can easily flip the port to the front side.

You can also build the X-LS model as a sealed box.

thanks Danny,
are the crossovers the same for the floor model?  I may be able to look at the floor model?
what are the downfalls of running as a sealed unit?

cheers

Both versions of the X-LS use the same crossover. (Same with the X-CS & MTM)

Sealed will have limited bass output, as it will have a roll off starting around 70Hz. The ported version is tuned at 55Hz and the tower version is tuned for 45Hz.

Thanks Hobbs.
is 6" acceptible for the ported or what would you reccomend?
I figure, if the roll off is 70Hz I can let my sub kick in at 80Hz or so to make up for it.

6" of airspace behind the speaker? That's about as close as I would recommend. But further will be better if possible.

And you want your subs to come in below the roll off point, closer to 50Hz for a sealed speaker otherwise youll get a big spike (or hole depending on phase) in output throughout the midbass, where they overalap.

If you have the speakers ported you'll want the subs set to about 35-40Hz.

Thanks Hobbs, Danny

I just received my shipping confirmation the other day for the XLS-Encores :)
I will be building them as sealed units, my current Center channel, Paradigm CC-170 have the following specs, so it will match better
  • Low Frequency Extension (DIN)   50Hz (DIN)
    Frequency Response   70Hz - 20kHz, + / - 2dB
I will try the sub at 50Hz and play around with it.
