Title: CAM, SAM, Super 3XRS, or Super 3 HO monitors?
Post by: AvsFan on 5 Feb 2020, 06:32 pm
Hello,

I am building an office system in a small 12x10 room. I have $1500 to spend on a pair of speakers. These will be placed close to the back wall 6-12 inches, and close to the corners of the room. So they will be close to all points of the wall, back, sides and corners. Is there a speaker that works BEST with this set up? And what are all the differences between the 4 speakers? Don't worry about sources or amplification, I will build around the speaker I pick.

I’ve owned SAM, Super 3 (wide baffle), Super 3U, and Super 3HO.  The Alnico driver is really special, but the RS5 driver is better on top (though drier) and a bit snappier.  The larger driver will handle more power and go louder.  It also has a better upper bass.  They are both about the same efficiency, but the smaller driver gives up about 10 hz or so on the bottom end.

The Super 3HO dual driver increases the power handling over the single driver version and fleshes out the midbass (+3dB).  But.........IMHO the second driver detracts from some of the qualities of the single driver.  To my ears the midbass to lower midrange is thickened a bit.

You have a small room with corner bass reinforcement.  The wide baffle Super 3 and CAM would work well in the corners.  I would also look into the Super 3 XRS - it is really a star.
