QTS? not any speaker OB ready?
« on: 31 Mar 2008, 11:23 am »
hi
a beginners question

1) What would happen if you use speakers more or less designed for closed box designs ( or ported) in an open baffle (OB) design?
2) and vice versa?

1) if you use active triamping with digital X-overs so 48dB/96dB slope filters?

I won't address the science portion of the equation, but having played with various drivers I would say that my experience has been this - less bass with drivers with lower QTS, higher FS, and lower XMAX.

This is to say that the best bass is made by lower FS, higher XMAX, and higher QTS drivers - in broadest terms possible.

IF you are talking mids and highs, I would not be THAT concerned about FS or QTS, or XMAX.  As long as you are running 250Hz or higher from the driver in question, then it simply comes down to how it sounds.

For bass, closer to 0.7 QTS the better, and lower FS the better.

As for Xovers, not sure how that would impact a driver, other than allowing it to work mostly in the passband you are designing, via the Xover.
