New ScanSpeak driver family
« on: 4 Oct 2018, 03:06 am »
Hi Jim, just wondering if you've had a chance to or are planning to look into the new ScanSpeak Ellipticor drivers as possible candidates for inclusion in speakers down the road. They look quite impressive from a design standpoint.

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

Or, are we paying too close attention, like proper train spotting geeks?  :) The custom Navy blue speaker linked uses the Ellipticor tweeter with an Illuminator woofer. The tell is the curving reinforcement only seen in the Illuminator mid/woofers. The Ellipticor woofers feature a smooth cone, elliptical dust cap, and cover for the mounting bolts.

These disassembled shots from Troels Gravesen's (http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Ellipticor-1.htm) site showing the details of the elliptical voice coil are this audio geek's idea of porn.

Look at how long that elliptical voice coil is!!  :o  And the tolerances they must keep to fit together elliptical voice coils into magnetic gaps. As someone involved in manufacturing I look at those and want to say to Scanspeak "now you're just showing off".

I will offer a semi-educated guess that Salk will wait for a deep pocketed patron/customer to show up to get into the Ellipticor based systems. In small quantities Scanspeak woofers are priced in these ranges based on product series:
  • Discovery - $70
  • Classic - $160 to $175
  • Revelator - $200-$340
  • Illuminator - $280 -$320
  • Ellipticor woofers - $675 - $690
  • Ellipticor tweeter - $460

Those prices are Madisound retail per driver, not for a pair. Even with a good manufacturer's discount for a pair of Ellipticor woofers and tweeters you are looking at circa $2000 just for the drivers.

Ok, Norman, so you've done the autopsy; what do you think?  Would this woofer bring a lot of new goodness to the party, compared to the Illuminator? Or does it all depend on what the designer/s think about the impact on the presentation?  I imagine you are going to say, "it all depends"...but wonder what you think.  Thanks.

True, but you are already looking at that and more for the drivers in the Salk Exotica Monitors, so if there are some kind of audible improvements with this new series of drivers, there will likely be at least a small group of customers ready to purchase.

Yes, the Exotic drivers are $3600 for the set of 4 iirc.

I'd like to hear these elipticors.
