What's your highest quality DVD-A

Ohhh come on, you KNEW the question was inevitable. Now that we've got the new Circle, I figured I might as well be the one to ask.

Blue Man Group AUDIO

Neat stuff, they really take advantage of the rear surrounds. Overall it sounds great and is a lot of fun to watch. Lots of low frequency stuff for the subwoofers too.  aa

Blue Man Group's Audio is un-friggin-believable.

Only two channels here in my system, but it still gives me total chills when playing it  :thumb:

Wow, that's a good one!   I'd have to say my favorite for quality (let alone music) is the meagerly 24/88.2 Beck Sea Change.  The improvement over the cd version, and of course the fine Eliott schneider 5.1 mix, is astounding.

Immersion, a collection of specifically-made-for-5.1 experimental stuff, is very high quality too.  And kudos to BMG's Audio, I agree.

Hi Folks

I would like to hear more about SACD and DVD A in electric jazz titles. I own a pioneer udp that plays both. Since my selection is under nourished i would like to build more of a collection. I live in Saskatoon where retailers are limited but my overdue discovery of Amazon has revitalized my interest in these formats.

Thanx in advance

Well,  it's an easy enough question for me, since I own only two DVD-A.  I'd long liked REM "Automatic for the People" on redbook CD even though the sound quality is mediocre at best.   So on a whim, I got the DVD-A version via eBay auction, and what a difference!  Not just the improvement in resolution and dynamics on 2-channel, but the multi-channel really sounds good.

Good ones listed, I a few of these myself.
My current 3 fav's are
Way Out West, Saxophone Colossus Sonny Rollins
Art Pepper meets the Rhythm Section

All are 192/24 2ch only, superbly remastered with JVC's K2 version for dvda.  Great sonics and a very low noise floor for 60's sessions.

I only have three _true_ DVD-A (NOT the Evil/Satanic Dual-Disc): The Grateful Dead titles (Workingman's Dead & American Beauty), and the Buena Vista Social Club. All three sound great.

To address a couple of comments, you might want to check out: www.classicrecords.com

They have a number of what they refer to as DAD & HDAD. All are two-channel, with the DAD at 24/96 and the HDAD at 24/192 resolutions. You do not need a DVD-A player for the DAD sides. As an aside, I'm of the opinion that the Classic Records approach is what DVD-A should have been.

I have a number of the DAD titles, and the only sonic shortcomings are due to the original recording. Some have gone out of print, but can be found cheap (I got Freddie Hubbard's Open Sesame new, in the shrink-wrap at Fry's for $4 and change).

Forgot: +1 on the Art Pepper title mentioned. There are SACD and DVD-A versions available.

The AIX stuff has excellent sonics.  You just have to find a genre that's to your liking.
A good place to start is Guitar Noir

Mark Waldrep is the founder/prez of AIX.  He and I have been emailing back and forth this week about stuff.  He and his engineer tech Dominic Roboletto are very nice people..

His latest interview (over an hour) on Home Theater Geeks is very good, and informative.

I have to second the Grateful Dead's American Beauty and Workingman's Dead, as well as Beck, Sea Change. I also think The Band, The Last Waltz and Fleetwood Mac, Rumours are good on DVD-A.

I am listening to the DVD-A version of American Beauty as I type this and it does indeed sound excellent!!  It is clearly a major step up from the cd version.

Another excellent DVD-A is Morph the Cat by Donald Fagen.  If you thought the cd version had killer bass, wait till you listen to the DVD-A.   :guitar: :drums:
