Title: Open Baffle Resources: DIY Drivers
Post by: JohnR on 5 Apr 2017, 03:11 pm
This post lists drivers for DIY open baffles. The list cannot possibly cover every driver that "could" be used in an OB configuration, so it focuses on drivers that are proven or popular for DIY use, or otherwise interesting. Drivers must also be readily available new to be listed.

Please post in this thread if you have a suggestion that is not already here or additional information that should be added to this post.

Update: I've tried to order each section roughly by cost. Just thought it would help people looking for drivers to focus in based on their budget.

Fullrange and mid-tweet

While any fullrange driver could be put onto an open baffle, this list mostly includes only those specifically suited for it, meaning high-ish Qts or that were recommended by members. Many have fairly low Xmax so you may want to supplement the bass when used on open baffle. Because of this, the list now includes full/wide-range drivers that have been recommended for use as a mid-tweet.

Woofers

There are two schools of thought for dipole woofers. One is that high Qts (0.7 or higher) is better as it tends to counteract the dipole roll-off. Often, these are "pro" style high sensitivity drivers and a low rolloff is chosen (eg. single inductor) to match a midrange or fullrange driver in the 200-300 Hz range. The other school of thought is that Qts doesn't matter so much because active EQ will be used.

Note that with the exception of the GR Research and Acoustic Elegance woofers, these woofers won't really deliver sub-bass. For dipole sub-bass, high-quality subwoofers can be used, often in a dual-opposed arrangement, provided they have low self-noise.

Midrange

Almost any cone driver can be used as a dipole midrange. Note that as frequency rises, the radiation from the rear of a cone driver is disrupted by the motor/basket structure, limiting the top of the usable range if you want to maintain a dipole radiation pattern. This list therefore includes only drivers that are largely symmetrical or distinguish themselves in some way.

Tweeters

The following list includes only dipole tweeters. Some drivers listed, specifically some AMTs, are not designated as dipole tweeters but are known to be usable as dipoles or at least open-back by removing the back chamber or foam pad/backing.  Some drivers listed are quite tall so be aware that tall tweeters will have reduced vertical dispersion.

Note that other drivers can be also be used in an open baffle speaker. Sometimes a "back to back" configuration is used. Some DIYers have used waveguide tweeters in order to maintain controlled directivity in the front hemisphere while allowing the radiation in the back hemisphere to fall to zero.

Drivers that are specifically NOT recommended

Discontinued drivers

These drivers have been moved out of the main list, but kept for reference in case they come back.

Hi John,

For passive woofers sytems, MCM has a number of very inexpensive drivers that can be used, some measured independently here http://www.mfk-projects.com/my_projects/Projects%202015/MCM%20woofers.html (http://www.mfk-projects.com/my_projects/Projects%202015/MCM%20woofers.html). Many of their house brand drivers have much higher Qts that spec'd, including some of the cast frame pro drivers.
At Parts Express, some Goldwood and GRS woofers also have high Qts (spec'd) that can be used passive.

cheers,

AJ

The Lowther PM6A works well in open baffle, and to my ears, sounds much better than any of the Fostex or Audio Nirvana drivers I tried.  Nelson Pass uses this driver in many of his OB designs.

The German dealer OmnesAudio have a 10" (OBW 1006), a 12" (OBW 1206) and a 15" (OBW 15PA) woofer for OB.

Thought they might be relevant for EU members :)

And the Monacor SP-382PA could also be a possible candidate for an OB woofer: https://www.monacor.com/en-gb/monacor/products/components/speaker-technology/pa-bass-speakers/sp-382pa/ (https://www.monacor.com/en-gb/monacor/products/components/speaker-technology/pa-bass-speakers/sp-382pa/)

Can be found at various dealers in Europe. Don't know about the US.

Guys this is a bit off topic but I'm interested in finding a smoother sounding compression tweeter driver for my Emerald Physic's 2.3's.  Any suggestions?

thanks

Can you start a new thread for that?

Why are there no cone tweeters recommended?

I dunno... I don't think I've seen a cone tweeter used in an OB... did you have some specific recommendation?

Before opening the backs of the compression drivers of the P-Audio in the V series,
Danny used a dome ......guess that made them bipole for the highs....for the rear.

Oops.....just noticed you said CONE not DOME.....

Dont all the full range driver O.B. use a cone.....or wizzer for tweets?

Yes, I guess if you use a fullrange driver it's also acting as a tweeter. At tweeter frequencies the output from the back is quite attenuated though.

I've added a few more drivers to the list, feel free to post if you have additional recommendations.

Kevin at http://www.glowinthedarkaudio.com/audionirvana.html
have tested some Nirvana ferrites notedly Classic10CF that was performed a very open sound as OB with a small tube amp in a previous version of this review, at the current price the Classic10CF are good value.

My few cents on a OB sub driver which I'm using in a Ripol setup with 4x15".
Can only say they play magnificent and go easily down to 20 hz. Applying DSP correction and mainly use them up 80 hz. In my system since 2011.

Thank you, added it to the list of woofers.

Removed Pure Audio drivers as they are no longer sold separately.

Moved kits to this thread.

Hello guys,
Theses 2 mid-bassspeakers sound very good in enclosures and get the good specs for OB, what do you think of them  :

Davis 20MC8A (FS 37; QTS 0.54; Sensitivity 91)
Dynaudio MN 172 Esotec ( FS 45; QTS 0.51; Sensitivity 90)

Plus for mid-bass I also wonder what to choose between GR Research M-165-16 and Wild Burro Betsy. My system will be 4 ways with a mid upon and a sub below My mid-bass operating from 100 to 500 hz. Any advice ?

Hi, your question is confusing. Your midbass drivers are for 100-500 Hz? And these 8" drivers are for below 100 Hz? They are too small for that.

OK if I split your question to a separate thread?

Here are some more options - the Bass drivers by Goldwood first a 15 inch driver GW-1558 and also their 18 inch Bass driver GW1858 , both are fairly inexpensive work great , and are used in many Open baffles speakers. The Mid-bass driver Eminence LiL' BUDDY at 98.8db with a Med-High Q, and is - 79.95 has been used by several people and is very recommended. The Eminence B102 woofer is also used in several Open baffles.

 - Several people are also running an Open Baffle Speaker with a Ciare CCH250 full range driver, and here is one quote - "The Ciare's are running without any filter network and sound surprising good". To repeat and augment an earlier recommendation Troels Gravesen who is a very respected and highly prolific speaker designer has used the Ciare NDH 15-4S bass drivers, as well as the Faital 15PR-400 bass drivers in several of his Open baffle designs, his designs are available with all the documentation and can be used by diy people - The speaker KITS are also available thru his website /and Jantzen Audio if you want to not have to do the leg work of finding the parts yourself. The JA8008-HMQ is one of the mid Range drivers he actually designed and is using in several OB's and is available online. And surprisingly the  SEAS T35C002 Dome tweeter is also used in Open baffle with a T35C002 Waveguide . Jordan Audio, and Mark Audio Alpair speakers are good candidates, and some Fostex drivers are too , all are full range Open Baffle candidates.... also the Tang Band 1808 is a good driver. Lastly for a new Mid-Range option the PRV 5MR450-NDY is a very nice driver that can be used with a baffle or even no baffle at all! Here is a quote from someone using 4 of them in a vertical array with no Baffle ... " I am using a quad array of PRV 5MR450-NDY 'full range' drivers (which roll off at about a 150Hz) " --- after going baffle-less he says - "Not to everyone's taste, admittedly, but after going baffle-less as an experiment. I was so shocked by the result, there is no going back!"

There are also some great used drivers floating around that work extremely well too for OB's - the Audio company Bastanis made Great 12 inch drivers for open baffles , and if you can find them Hammer Dynamics had a very nice 12 inch driver designed specifically for Open Baffle speakers!
There are Many Vintage options too! Vintage drivers can be found on ebay and other places, many Coral drivers are good candidates, as are vintage drivers that come out of old stereo consoles - Zenith drivers are very in demand , especially the Zenith 49CZ852 which is a highly sought after 12 inch driver - see glowinthedarkaudio.com and various forum threads. Another vintage driver option are Saba Green Cone speakers as well. If you are really committed , a high end idea are french EMS/Fertin Field Coil drivers which work very well in Open Baffles, and are said to be very musical.

Best Regards,
Dean

There are three Visaton open-baffle kits not included in the list. I don't know if this is on purpose.

SOLO 20 https://www.visaton.de/en/products/fullrange-systems/solo-20

The next two are really part open baffle (woofer only)

GRAND ORGUE https://www.visaton.de/index.php/en/products/fullrange-systems/grand-orgue

Hi, the first is not OB (?), the others are plans not kits. There is another thread for plans but if these are OB only in bass I don't think they meet the definition for inclusion. You can post in the other thread if you like.
