How 'Bout the Laser

I'm wondering...is there a big difference between the laser's in different CDP's or DVD players ?? Anyone got an answer for me ?? Is one better than the other ?? Thanks !! :)

There is a  difference in the Laser Pick up assemblies. Of course some are better, some worse but in general, it is a device that is pretty straight forward - Laser Diode, Prism/Lense and Optical receiver IC. The most important is probably how reliable the pick up is.

There were older pick up designs by Sony using FE, TE and RF amplifiers built in to the optical receiver IC. These were the best.

Hello Ben,

Sorry to say these are long gone, but you can still find them around used. Their reliablty is enormous, so no problem there.

Sony CDP-X303ES, CDP-X559ES, CDP-X707ES, CDP-X779ES.

With some PS mods and Precision clock these turn out to be the best CD transport money can buy.
