Oppo 93 or Oppo 95?
« on: 20 Dec 2011, 03:50 pm »
For my HT only.  I don't listen to SACD's or music in the HT.

Is the movie sound and picture better with the 95 versus the 93?  I'd be strictly HDMI connections.

If you are strictly using HDMI, I would save the coin and go with the 93.  The delta with video is not much.

If you are only using HDMI get the 93 since there are no diffs in the HDMI circuitry.

Because they both use the same video board, Marvell Kyoto-G2 processor and transport, I would venture to say that video performance is identical, as corroborated by the comparison reviews I have read.

The extra $500 buys you analog audio features that you won't be using - Two ESS Sabre32 9018 DACs for 7.1 and stereo, true balanced XLR analog stereo outputs and better analog power supply.  And more deluxe casework.

Thanks for the insights.  I use a Panny BD30? right now and the load times suck.  I am hoping for improved sound and picture with something like an Oppo.

Do you think the newer dacs and video processors in the Oppo will be a major improvement over the 3 year old Panny?

I bought the 93 and am very happy with it. I don't use it for music but its analog outs sound decent if not spectacular. If you already own a good DAC you could probably get equal to better sound than the 95 by running the digital outs through it.
The 93 has a smaller footprint and there should be no difference in PQ compared to the 95. One feature I'm really happy with, and that seperates it from the cheaper Panasonics, Samsungs, etc, is the streaming capabilities. I use Mezzmo to stream 1080p from my PC and it works flawlessly. I tried streaming directly to my TV over ethernet and the picture was two dimensional with stuttering and other issues.

Thanks.  Strictly a HT setup with no external dac'ing going on.  I was hoping for improved sonics and would love to get a boost in picture, but I am so not a video guy - meaning I will not tweak the video cuz I know not what I am doing.

The same question goes for me. I currently have the Oppo 83 & just picked up a Panasonic 3D Plasma so I need to move up to either the 93 or 95. I run the HDMI directly into the display & I use 7.1 analog for the audio. I have an older NAD AVR that doesn't support HDMI. I wouldn't use the new unit for 2 channel (maybe on ocasion) but that's not my focus. My only sticky point is if the Sabre DAC's in the 95 would be a worth while step up over the DAC's in the 93 strictly for Blu Ray audio. There's a $500. differece in price between the two. If it's not going to be a big sonic difference it might not be worth it.

I've had my 93 for a little over a year, and have no complaints. If you do not need Much Onboard DAC, or XLR outputs, I think the 95 is going to be a waste of your money. I didn't get a 95 because I don't have high enough quality kit downstream to justify the price difference. Some links I posted in another Oppo thread, comparing the 93 to the 95. The difference in output quality between the two is _small_:

While the 93 has a lot of features, it is easy to set up. With the 93, what you see (and hear) out of the box is what you get.

Being an A/V guy, I just eyeballed it on the video set up. After a couple of months, I ran through a couple of proper setup discs, and when I was off, it wasn't more than a notch on the scale.

Can you get all the surround formats for movies if you use all analog connections and just run the HDMI straight to the projector?

I assume this is the way to get the player to decode versus the processor to decode.

Yes - the player has the decoders.  With my old pre/pro that's exactly how I used the BDP-83

I believe the new Oppos don't do 1080p/24; the old Oppos do but they don't have 3D, Netflix, etc.

Not sure if it matters for your application but still food for thought.

My BDP-95 has 7.1 analog outputs and supports most media including FLAC, it also has dual HDMI outputs in case you run one to a projector and other to a receiver. You can have a 3D TV and pre-3D HDMI receiver and all will be happy. The 95 does “True 24p Video”.

A couple of simple questions for you oppo owners out there, please:

Can the Oppo BDP 95 play a SACD or into the two channel stereo audio out?

Can the Oppo BDP 93 play a SACD into the two channel stereo through digital outputs?

Thanks in advance for any clarification, as I have read the website documentation, but I am not sure as to the answers to both questions.

I use my 95 for SACD with balanced XLR outputs only.

SACD is copy protected.  If you have a hybrid SACD, you can play the CD layer through the digital outs but not the SACD layer.
