"Fiddleback" walnut
« on: 10 May 2013, 08:05 pm »
We just started working with a new batch of curly walnut veneer.  I have to say, this is about the most uniformly figured walnut I have seen.  It almost looks like fiddle-back maple dyed a dark walnut color (but it isn't).

Here are a pair of SongTowers done in it...

And a close-up...

Thought you might like to see it...

I wonder what 5/4 planks of that stuff would cost? What a trestle table top that would make.

Probably about $422 plus shipping. I have two beautiful book matched walnut planks from Horizon Wood Products I'm going to use for either a side table or very nice rack for my electronics. A table would need 4 planks, the wood I bought is KD 6/4 Walnut pc 2: 22.8bdft @ $9.25/bdft = $210.90.

Even though it is extremely risky unless the wood is bone dry, about 5% moisture content, a solid wood front baffle on Salk speakers is an amazing thing to behold. I have solid mesquite but walnut should work too.

Horizon Wood Products cuts logs into flitches and planks and has some outrageous planks. I am making all my kitchen cabinet Craftsman doors from a flitch of cathedral arched 4/4 white oak, some of the planks are 16" wide so there will be no glue lines in any of the panels.

This months special is figured cherry - here is some 4/4 they have on their website:

For quilted/curly/fiddleback walnut in bookmatched sets it would be more like $2000 and up....IF you could even find it in board thicknesses. Instrument grade lumber - especially walnut, is unbelievably expensive.

Here are a few shots of the SongTowers that I picked up from FedEx two days ago! Long wait, though it was well worth it. It's hard to believe that this veneer is "standard."

Rooster, my Salk Silks are on a Fedex truck somewhere between Michigan and California as I type this.  Your speakers look fantastic.  It won't be much longer for me.

John, It's all worth it when you (carefully) tear into the shipping box. I look forward to seeing photos of my SongTowers' more sophisticated younger siblings once you receive them.

Rooster,

Where did you get those glides/pads for the spikes?

Looks like the same glides I use, they are from Herbie's Audio Lab, $16.89 each and they are very nice.

Those would be the ones. I haven't done any A/Bs, but the theory is sound and they keep the hardwood floor from getting destroyed.

Wow, from some angles it looks like your speaker is a solid log of wood!!

May they bring you hours and hours of joy!
