Choosing new caps for crossover upgrade
« on: 28 Oct 2020, 12:59 pm »
Hello everyone,

I am interested in finding out more information about how to choose between brands of caps when looking for parts. I have seen a few posts mentioning that some make speakers sound more bright or mellow, but don't really understand why/how that is.

I am asking in preparation of upgrading the crossover of my JBL 4312As.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best,
Loïc

Because the value of a capacitor is what it actually measures, not the value printed on the case, always use a capacitor meter to check the capacitors you install. For example the actual value of a 10% tolerance 2 microfarad capacitor can be anywhere between 1.8uF and 2.2uF and be in spec.  This would change your system balance if you had installed the 1.8uF in one channel and the 2.2uF in the other channel.

For best results install the new capacitors as matched pairs, channel to channel, to make sure both channels are the same.

You may want to read through what Troels Gravesen went through when he rebuilt a pair of L-100s for a friend:

Adhere to Franks advice. To learn more about the sound signatures go to HumbleHiFi for their Cap reviews. Have fun.

Another fun read is when Tyson brought his Klipsch Forte III to Danny Ritchie of GR Research to upgrade.

I have been reading about Kemet ALC10S Slit Foil Capacitors. They are designed for audio circuits (like crossovers) rather than power supplies.
