Open back midrange?
« on: 12 Dec 2019, 02:20 am »
I would be interested in hearing from SS owners as to how they’re configuring the open back midrange of these speakers. Do you prefer open or closed? Do you adjust the configuration to accommodate different program material? Have you removed any or all of the acoustic stuffing? How far out into the room are your speakers placed?
As for me, I like a big soundstage for symphonic works, and configure my SS 9.5s with the rear of the speaker 4’ from the back wall, open back. I haven’t yet experimented with pulling out any of the wool.

I have the SS 10's. I like them better with the back closed with studio recordings as opening the back tends to diffuse the image. With live and orchestral program content I put two magnet spacers, about 3mm, on the top two magnets of the closed back board and this gives me the "space" that this type of music needs. Experiment with how much you open the back as small changes make big differences.
