New Biradial Horn for TAD TD-2002
« on: 17 Apr 2020, 03:54 am »
I've been commissioned to build an ES-600 Biradial (600Hz Fc) using a 1" throat instead of the normal 1.4". The customer wanted to use a TAD TD-2002 compression driver. The horn flare is completely custom to perfectly match the driver's exit angle. I just happen to have another customer's pair of TD-2001 drivers here to test before shipping the horns. So I've done a complete set of measurements on the horn. This is the first time for me making a 600Hz horn using a 1" throat. As you'll see this provided some fantastic off-axis performance. I've also included my subjective listening impressions. https://croweaudio.blogspot.com/2020/04/es-600-biradial-with-tad-td-2001.html?fbclid=IwAR0huOHb6ieDXUl5VMCpgAX2nHlZFZDhUENd8JjIbYrgyhIyMVmvaoncCmc

Thank you.  I make the horns on my CNC machine.  This is a time lapse of the actual horn being made.

Very nice work.  Do you also have measurements of the 1khz ES horns with TAD drivers?  I've got a pair of TD 2002s waiting for a project.

Thank you!  I’ve done full testing of the ES-800 + TD-2001 in a previous blog post here...
https://croweaudio.blogspot.com/2019/10/tad-td-2001-on-es-800-biradial-horn.html?m=1

I’ll be making a pair of ES-800 biradial soon for another customer with the TD-2001.  Ive revised the flare geometry to eliminate the very small dip at 1.5kHz.

Sorry to be slightly off subject, but I own a pair of Spatial Audio M3's that use a horn loaded compression driver crossed over at 800Hz, or so I'm told. There is an aluminum flare shape that projects the sound, pardon my ignorance, but just asking if you have thoughts using aluminum instead of wood; and if detrimental, should I treat it with felt, etc.?

Ric, since you have a thread started about this particular issue (https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=169099.0) I'm posting the link here in case the OP of this thread would like to comment and we don't derail his thread rehashing your legitimate question here.  :D
