I don't wanna work
« on: 1 Jan 2013, 12:28 am »
I just wanna bang on my drum all day.
I could have sworn there was a drummer's thread on here but I can't find it.
For best rock drummer it was always a toss up between Keith Moon and Jim Gordon for me but I just got done with an ELP mini-marathon and Carl Palmer was just outstanding.  He reminds me a lot of Bill Bruford.
Two really underrated ones were Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts - neither one were very flashy but when you go back and listen to their stuff they were always so solid and just perfect for the songs.

There was a drummers thread, about a year ago. Starting a who's the best drummer discussion is about as fruitless as a best guitarist thread. But hell, I'll bite. Steve Gadd is the best all around drummer alive. He can play anything with anyone. The people you mention are ham an' eggers compared to him.

Vinnie Calaiuta and Billy Cobham would be high on my list.

Of course from the woodshed also is David Garibaldi(Tower of Power)
There's tons of them and all superb,Dave Weckl is another.
Ive seen drummers who play simple but solid(in the pocket) and some that play solid and get very busy and destroy the groove(NON PROS)
Pink Floyds drummer(Nick Mason)if I remember right, very basic but for Pink Floyd I don't think you would want it busier, superb feel,in the pocket, great sounding drums ect.
I love it when I hear a in the pocket drummer who plays for the song (which I believe is the star of the show) and has his kit tensioned just so.
The sound,oh the sound nuff said.
Also when the music calls for more busier playing I like that also as it brings everything up a few notches especially coming from master players.

Nick Mason is very underrated.  Shoot, I forgot Terry Bozio, he was really good.
I saw Mr. Caliauita with Jeff Beck and that is one powerful drummer!  It was hard to tell but he looks like a really big guy.
Which of the current crop are the top drummers?

New breed would be David Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of The Foo Fighters....actually Taylor is the drummer, but Dave was the Drummer of Nirvana and occasionally sits behind the kit now and then....can bang them with the best of them still.

Here's some Taylor:

Actually, he's been around a while, but he's another who could play anything with anyone. Certainly in my top 5.

I always liked Stuart Copeland. Technique, clever, tasteful, musical, but still enough wiseass left to be a real drummer.

Absolutely they do. For rock and metal without a question. Not taking away, but they are no longer the greatest, the old guys.

Sure. When I get home I'll post some examples. Neil Peart is warmup practice for these guys.
