So with all this talk lately about a BDP-1 and HiRes music files, it begs the question as to where your getting your music from??

What sites are offering up this format currently??

Wayne.

Try Emmylou Harris and her album Wrecking Ball, ...download the lossless version. If you want to sample one track the first track titled 'Where Will I Be'.

This album is terrific.

Be very cautious as to what you are buying.  Most of it is reprocessed off analog tape, hence not 'really' true HD (BTW, HD is not defined).

You will most pleasantly surprised to hear music recorded by multiple digital mics and mixed digitally.  iTrax is the only site I am aware that is the real 100% deal.  To quote their website; Only tracks that have actually been recorded and delivered in HD, rather than tracks that have been upsampled or transferred from older 'standard definition' sources [as most so-called HD music offerings are], will be available through iTrax.

Cheers, John Bruns

If the analog tape is of good quality, the A/D conversion at a higher bit and sampling rate should still be superior to a 16-bit/44.1KHz conversion.

All microphones are analog.  Whether the A/D conversion is internal to the microphone or in an external unit is most likely of little consequence.

Chesky are honest too. However I'm not a big fan of their house sound. They have this theory that they should always record from a distance with a stereo pair of mics. Which includes their (sometimes questionable) room acoustics. Which then combines with my (definitely questionable) room acoustics. Which in the end may sound like a sewer's acoustics.

I can take that for records of remarkable live performances where you cannot place microphones on the stage, but otherwise I prefer close miked recordings.

A circle dedicated to nothing but HiRez Music.
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?board=150.0

By the way, Steve (SRB), listen to the Mark Waldrep (AIX Records Founder) lengthy interview here and he'll shoot down your idea that good analog tape has any chance for the dynamics of live music (A prerequisite, in his mind, to the term HiRez...or HD).  He claims that good analog tape or vinyl can't even get to the levels of good 12 bit.  Anyway, interesting debate.

I'm going to be writing an article for a new eZine (prolly a column) and it's become clear that as more and more HiRez (my general definition is a simple "digital medium greater than redbook" swag right now) is available, more and more people are questioning it's sources Rhino calling redbook "high definition" to differentiate it from MP3??, Norah Jones "Come Away With Me" stereo SACD layer accidentally mastered from , .  In the video world it's not hard to tell visually.....in the audio world it ain't so easy...and there's nor reason to think that the same percentage of scams available in any interest/hobby/industry won't also arise here.  The real issue is to get to some standards real soon.   Mark's might be a bit out there, but unlike other stabs at it it sure has well-defined and well-identifiable boundaries.

Mark's interview at Home Theater geeks TWIT network:  http://twit.tv/htg9

By the way, Chesky's HDTracks have both native HiREZ and now are producing, with the state-of-the-art DSD conversion techniques of Grammy-nominated Bruce Brown (Puget Sound Studios) some nice 24/88.2 "downrez'd" 2 channel SACD to PCM releases.

1. Mhhh.... this would confirm my hypothesis that 16/44.1 is good enough but they botch the job big time at recording/mixing/mastering stage.....

2. It wasn't "accidental". They don't give a flying f*** on quality. They are into making money period. As much as possible as to justify a bigger bonus for the CEO.

3. For some reason Bryston is shunning HDMI, DSD and SACD. Not that they would solve anything but we won't get there with Bryston.

Nah. We're discussing what's available for the Bryston media player to be launched soon. I guess James is interested too in our opinions as loyal Brystonians.   :D
