My parents are looking for a small stereo system to go with the living room TV.  Not looking for the ultimate in fidelity.  Basically, something that will be better than the speakers on the flat screen and for occasional music.  Pretty small speakers are wanted, so a 2.1 system may be what is needed.

The budget is $500 for the speakers and receiver (ideally, even a little lower).  Any suggestions?

I have a Yamaha RX-V2200 that is about 10 years old, I haven't used it in about 4 years...they sound great for what they are and listed over 2K back in 2002 when they were first out.  They can be found on eBay for around $100, which is a great price.  Find a pair of Dynaco A25's for under $200.00 and then you have around $100 to find a decent small sub...the total is $400, which leaves room for shipping....

Another thought is hitting you local Goodwills and Salvation Army stores as they get a lot of decent stereo gear right after Christmas...I woundn't count on finding decent speakers there, but many decent receivers in the mid-fi range.
