Greg,

I can't remember if you have said how you drive the Dipole15, with voicecoils in series or parallel.
From your comments about EQ I would assume parallel drive. Or have you tried both ways ?

Running parallel mostly. Did try single coil with lpad across other coil to adjust resonance. Cute trick that i may use for the final version.

Greg,

Could you elaborate a bit how resonace would be affected in this case. No signal just a L-pad ?

Just an Lpad.  Not really sure how to explain the science of what is going on, but Bill Duddleston of Legacy Audio uses the trick quite a lot.  As far as I remember, he patented the idea many years ago.  He is the one who described it to me at last years RMAF.  I told him about the Dipole woofers with dual coil and he immediately told me to try the trick.  I did not save any measurements, but there was a 3-4 dB range centered around the FS point of the woofer when adjusting the LPAD from fully shorted to full value.  Never boosted of course, only a cut as you got closer to shorting out the coil.  Same effect on frequency response could be achieved with EQ, but not sure if transient response was affected.  Hard to tell.  Will revisit this once I have the full, triple layer bamboo baffles that don't vibrate as much.

You may find some more info by searching at the DIYAudio site.  I seem to remember reading about it there too several years ago.

Hope you are enjoying your IB15.  It is a far superior choice to the Alphas.

Thanks for the answer, Greg.

I absolutely enjoy the IB15s, it was like lifting a vail from the speakers. Amazing that something playing only to 250 Hz could have that importance.

250Hz sounds a lot higher in tone than most people imagine.  Fix that area up and male vocals and bass guitar sound CLEAN.

Made some more progress on the Rythmik subs going with the open baffle system.

I suppose I was listening to the Alpha15's shortcomings before. Now I just hear the IB 15's quality. In fact allover quality is vastly improved.

Greg,

I found a page which actually explains your L-Pad trick: http://www.oocities.com/f4ier/dvc.htm .

Ah ha!  Excellent work Mr. Sherlock Ohms.

I am going to substitute the Dipole 15 for a B & C 15NDL76 to see what happens. Since I am going to be using the Rythmik servo subs for the low end below 60Hz or so, it really makes no sense to keep the Dipole 15 in the system.  Kind of overkill for what I need now, so it may be up for sale soon.  I still feel it is the ultimate dipole driver out there, but the Neo 10s sound great lower than expected and I want more low end impact than only 1 Dipole 15 cannot provide, so we move on to version 4 of the system.  Bamboo is here though, and I've settled on the original baffle layout, so wood will be cut soon for the final version.

Got everything back together this weekend.  Wow!  Between the acoustical treatments, the switch to the B&C and having both subs done, I am really cooking with gas now.  I am getting by far the best sound in my system ever.  This setup has easily surpassed the studio mains for detail and low level resolution.  And the bass output and pitch definition with the combo of the B&C and dual Rythmik subs is just stunning!  I'm getting flat response in room to nearly 10Hz.

I have more Ready Acoustics frames in the way to make a "cloud" for the ceiling and then I have to make up my mind if I am going to push the Neo10 count up to 4 per side.  Bamboo has been waiting to go to the CNC guy, but I've got to try 4 per side to see what I can gain first.  Now that PE sells them and I have a wholesale account, I am having very bad thoughts....

Hi Greg

if you use 4 neo10 how would you arrange them on the baffle ?

What frequency are you running the BG10s down to and what slope XO?

Currently LR24 @ 300Hz.  Finally got baffle size, shape and layout finalized this weekend.  Off to the CNC guy soon.  Hoping to be done with entire project soon.

Did you try the Dipole15 with the Rythmic subs?  I wonder how the dipoles15s compare to the B&Cs in your current setup.  The B&Cs are more sensitive right, but do you just eq that all away?

I preferred the B&C...both were tested with the subs.
