OK so $399 for a fully balanced/differential amp. What do you guys think?

I noted its not dual mono, but its better value than this link (same price) preamp is very useful feature.

Very cool, thanks for the heads up John.
Basically a balanced version of the BiFrost for $100 more with volume control and headphone outputs. That's just about the perfect desktop solution to go with active/powered speakers.
Wonder now if they'll do a Multi-Bit version, maybe combine the Gungir with Mjolnir 2. That would be so killer.
-
I would love to have an all in one unit like that on my desktop..
I think Schiit has another hit on there hands..
-
Several advantages of having all in one unit.
Less cables (Interc and power) smaller unit
and of course price.

They haven't explicitly ruled out a multi-bit version, but the modular board space is very tight so it is unlikely at least in the immediate future.
edit: had some wrong information in there

It is mighty impressive that the amp has a low enough noise floor for very sensitive IEMs, but can also drive HE-6s (see Jude's video on HeadFi). Not a lot of amps can say that. And certainly not in this price range.
-
Don't forget about the iFi-Audio micro iDSD folks.
DAC/Amp with a built-in battery that can also power sensitivity IEMs all the way up to the power hungry HE-6. :thumb:
-
And of course the Chord Mojo should also be considered along with this and the iDSD Micro. Lots of great options out there!!!
-
But the big but, the DAC section of the Jotunheim can be upgraded/swapped out. And of course it is a balanced design.

Here's a brief review:

I should like to use it with my HD800 but read on a couple of other forum that the amp is a bit boosted in the treble and there fore is not such a good match.
It also puzzles me that there seems to be no review of any Schiit products on sites like Innerfidelity and HeadMania.

Um, Schiit has most certainly been covered by Inner Fidelity. For example:

Hi, I was thinking about it as an amp only.
Aaanyway... I ended up buying a used Mjolnir 2. Happy as a pig in Schiit. So far.

At the time of your post, I thought the $399 price was for the whole shebang (dac and amp)..
I do like the idea of a one piece unit serving both functions.. If you throw in the fact that it’s
fully balanced (which is something I would like to have going forward) the Jotunheim makes
for a nice unit for not too much money. I would also like to hookup a pair of powered speakers
at some point which I can’t do with my present setup..
Congratulations on the Mjolnir 2, that Schiit would make me happy to. Do you have it paired with
a Dac? I see on another thread you returned a couple of multibit dac’s..
-
I would imagine the Jotunheim w/ DAC to be a nice combo at the price. But, no personal experience.
The Mjolnir 2 was a bit of a surprise purchase, one just happened to pop up locally... I'm messing about with different DAC boards hanging off SBC streamers (Raspberry Pi and ODroid C1+).

how do you feel about the mjolnir? im deciding between buying a new jotunheim and a used mjolnir. sound quality will tip the scale if you have any thoughts to share.
-
I have owned a Schiit Modi and a Modi Multibit and been very pleased with both. Schiit products seem to outperform their price points easily. If I were suggesting brands for starting-out or C&C audiophiles, Schiit and NAD would probably be the first ones I'd mention. And many higher-end users would probably like them too, despite the tendency of some hobbyists to label anything affordable as 'mid-fi'.

To be honest, I sold it, i found it too large for my desk and decided to go a different path. I liked the MJ2 best with 5670 tubes (and adapter sockets). Also I've realized that all headphones sound better with EQ (once you figure out how to do it) so I now put that as a priority over the amp.

so you owned MJ2?
i was asking about MJ1.
i was wondering if it sounded any good or not?
ill be using it with Hifiman He400i, with Monolith 1060, amd with Sennheiser HD650. i dont have balanced cables now but id be buying some one for each headphone if i decide to get a mjolnjir. ofcourse it would be so much more economical to go with Jotunheim

Yes, the post of mine that you quoted says "Mjolnir 2" :)
I have not heard Mjolnir (1) or Jotunheim. However if you don't already have a balanced system, perhaps look to Magni 3? (I don't have one of those either, but you can find lots of reviews.)
