I am finding that I really enjoy listening to live recordings on my rig... esp. those that seem to convey the spirit and soundstage of the concert.
I was curious what some of your faves are -- be it for the beauty and brilliance of the performance itself, the quality of the recording or its ability to put you "there."
Throw out some noteworthy recordings and take a moment to share why its tops in your collection. I'll get it started...
Ben Harper -- "Live From Mars" -- Disc 1 is with the Innocent Criminals - and it's big, bold and rockin'; Disc 2 is solo acoustic stuff that's just gorgeous and heartfelt. Great stuff.

Etta James, "Rocks the House", is great for it's loose, strong, party groove. Makes you feel like it's 1963 and you're there. Always livens up a gathering.
-

That reminds me, I forgot another fabulous performance.....
Etta James doing Take It To The Limit on Live From San Fransisco.
After you listen to this track you find out who was meant to perform this Don Henley song. To say the Eagles version is anemic (at best) in comparison is an understatement.
-
Get this one for the great DVD. It's the Mule accompanied by many renown bassists and a few others (such as Bella Fleck), and it has a few musical facets and moods.

SOme of my live favs has already been mentioned...here's one not yet mentioned...
Miles Davis "we want Miles", a double LP released in '82 of highlights of his late '81 tour. Two tracks that really stood out was 'Jean Pierre' and 'My Man's gone now', if the latter don't move you...well, better check for a pulse...totally heart wrenching.
DOn't think it was ever released on cd...
-
Three more.... :thumb:
Slade "Alive"...

Ray Brown Trio "Summer Wind: Live at the Loa"

"International Guitar Night II"
-
Most of mine have been mentioned. But a couple more are:
Sting, "Bring on the Night" and
Wynton Marsalis, "Live at Blues Alley"
On both of these albums, the keyboard work is the absolute standout - Kenny Kirkland on the first and Marcus Roberts on the second. Especially Marcus Roberts. What is it about blind black guys that makes them so damn good on the piano...?
Chad
-
Likewise on IGN II (no bullshit) and as I've said somewhere, My Man's Gone Now is a beautiful thing and I gotta believe Miles Davis would do this like nobody's business. Guess I gotta hear youngblood, too, Chad, cause Kenny Kirkland was/is very impressive in my world. Shelly Manne and His Men at the Manne Hole; Crusaders at The Lighthouse.

Starting this thread is going to cost me .... hundreds and hundreds of dollars (*or just 11 dollars if I stumble upon another yard sale like I did last weekend!) ... Seeing LOTS of artists that are new to me and certainly many recordings I didn't know existed.
I'll toss another old favorite out there because I haven't seen it mentioned and it's some of the most dexterous and mind-blowing musicianship three guys have put out:
-
This thread reminds me that I really don't have too many "live" albums, which is a shame. Some of my favorites in my collection include:

Patricia Barber : A fortnight in France
Jazz at the Pawnshop collection (U ain't audiophile if ya ain't got dis)
Nirvana - Unplugged

Seether - One Cold Night

ecramer - Aw man! Uriah Heep Live! I forgot all about that one. Owned the vinyl (all of which are long since dumped :duh:). Saw them live in the local hockey rink with J. Giels, and maybe Seger too? He played everywhere in the Detroit area in those days. Thanks for the memories! I need to get that on CD.

Wilco - Kicking Television
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense (better with video)
Rickie Lee Jones - Naked Songs
Joni Mitchell -Shadows and Light (better with video; Jaco is king)
A couple of cheats (kinda live, but not really):
Nils Lofgren Authorized Bootleg - Back It Up Live (great version of Beggars Day)
Cowboy Junkies - Trinity Revisited
-

Taking some cues from the postings in this thread, I managed a couple sweet coups this weekend while trolling our local stoop-sale (yard sale/garage sale in any other parlance) circuit.
I grabbed up Led Zeppelin's "How the West Was Won" for $2
(http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/5e/cf/8656228348a0ace7e3bd0110.L.jpg)
and Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51tmZBotdRL._SS500_.jpg)
also just $2. Both in original jewel cases and in mint condition. I grabbed 8 others for $2 each as well... Tis the season.

Many great albums listed here. Mentioned earlier, there is a Zappa/Mother's cut with Flo and Eddie singing, "She Painted Up Her Face", I think that was on 200 Motels.
Tonight, I'm on a Zevon run:
Stand in the Fire

I love this thread and will certianly post more tonight. Just for something that has not been mentioned though:
Miles Davis - The Cellar Door Sessions 1970
These mythical, Washington, DC December dates, released for the first in this impressive six-CD compilation, are an extension of Miles Davis's fusion LP, Live-Evil. The crew includes: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson , percussionist Airto Moreira, saxophonist Gary Bartz, and guitarist John McLaughlin (featured only on some of the nights).
