A wheel is mandatory in my opinion. I've got a Logitech unit that's something like $120.
Having it on your lap would be frustrating. I made a stand for mine that straddles me via the arms on my home theater chairs, works very well if you have the option. Otherwise, those long legged type stands that sit on the floor, and rest on the cushion you sit on would suffice.
