How about a prediction on the National Title game? Heisman qb, best backfield in the nation, couple of All-Americans, entire OL returns, blur speed everywhere...here's my pick for the first year playoff winner ....

Well, I 'm a big UCLA Bruin fan and the Pac 12 should be a great battle for starters. Maybe the Ducks can make it all the way. As for the other team, it's probably a toss up with Florida State and 'Bama.
Nick
PS those uniforms look a lot better than a few years ago....thank goodness :thumb:
-
Duck's biggest game, except for Michigan St. perhaps, will be your UCLA group down in the Rose Bowl. Both L.A. teams are loaded.
Those nice things said...I went to Cal and love the Ducks ... so .... :duel:
-
Speaking of Cal, the Bears had some good teams a few years back and I always Tedford was a very good coach. Not sure what happened there

Boy George?

That may be the BCS runnerup...or the Taft High School Tigers. Not sure.

Never much paid attention to college ball until my daughter went off to Penn State
Bill O'Brien did a great job keeping things together after the sanctions but everyone knew he was biding his time waiting for the call from the NFL.
I'm looking forward to an exciting season with new coach James Franklin at the helm starting with there first game in Ireland against UCF.

Yes, Franklin has done an outstanding job with recruiting this summer. Big hopes for a school with a big burden.
(BTW, an old friend is a Professor Emeritus in the Business School at PSU! Great school.)

Looks like Michigan decided to end the Notre Dame series a year early.

Big 10 got hammered pretty bad. Not 100% positive, but I don't think any Big 10 school won a football game today. To top it off, Ohio State is behind and it's currently the 4th quarter.
-
I don't think there will be any Playoff party for the Big 10. (Can they count over there? I see 14 teams. Bigger 14?.)

Penn State did :thumb:

Nice that my Hokies broke through on a big game! :thumb:
I sure hope that this is a change in the program. It's nice to have a QB with consistent confidence. (Logan Thomas had all the talent in the world but geez, the inconsistency. :duh: )

Michael Brewer is as tough as an old boot! Great game.

Looks like all sanctions against Penn State have been lifted immediately by the NCAA so they are now Bowl eligible with its full allotment of scholarships. No surprise here IMHO.
College football is big money for the NCAA as well as the BIG 10. A weakened Penn State is bad for business.

Anyone think it was just a coincidence this happened after the B1G suffered a big beat down the previous Saturday? While it is still early and weird things happen in college football, if the selection were today, no B1G team would make the playoff.

Double down on the healthy Marcus hope. We saw what happened last year when he played hurt.

Absolutely no connection whatsover
I saw this coming after Penn State lost big against Ohio State on prime time TV.
Anyway, I'm happy for the team and students. Collateral damage in that whole mess.

Nike dude (Knight?) went there. They design and test new ones all the time. It's not going to end soon.

Lemme see. Jameis Winston breaks windows with a bb gun, allegedly rapes a gal and is under investigation by the school, steals food from a market, yells offensive, obscene stuff, allegedly lies to the school about it, and gets a
half-game WHOLE one game suspension. Those football folks down in Tallahassee (and too many other schools) really know how to mete out the discipline.
-
Allegations. The only ones found legit were being naughty with a BB gun and saying naughty words. Yay media.
-
I think a lot of women would find a bit more offensive fault with what he was yelling than "naughty words"...especially given the Title IX investigation pending on him.

Unless your team lost, what a great week in college football. 2, 3, 4, 6, 14, 17 go down. And a few more go wayside by end of day. Most of them beat by quality teams, but not sure when the last time 4 of the top 6 lost in the same week.
-
Some killer games today. Arizona pulls one out of the fire against USC with an unbelievable Hail Mary, worth watching you get a chance.
BSU Nevada pretty darn good watch, as well,

Add #8 UCLA to the list of the fallen.
-
Wow, what a day of college football. The most dramatic for me was Ole Miss beating Alabama with the last second interception when it looked like the Tide was driving in for the winning touchdown. A close second was the AZ hail mary mentioned above.
-
What a great weekend for watching college football!! I was so stuck to the tv yesterday that my wife threatened divorce! What's the problem? She makes me watch Dancing With the Stars. :(
-
My gripe is that the rankings start too soon. The pressure continues to increasingly maintain all those unsupported pre-season expectations with minimally relevant early season experience.
IMO the rankings should start the first weekend in October, but thanks to all the upsets the rankings look pretty solid to me.
-
The Committee, which is the only ranking body that counts, doesn't come out with their rankings until next week.

My Nittany Lions are about to catch a beating, maybe of a lifetime, this Saturday against Ohio State.
Nationally televised on ABC and on Prime Time. Great
Sanctions have really showed its effect this year while some of James Franklin's play calling has been questionable.
Defense has been solid while the offensive line is just terrible. Only one starter from last year on the line while another has been out with an injury. Two other lineman are converted defensive lineman. :duh:
After this weekends loss, they'll be 4-3 with Maryland, Indiana, Temple, Illinois and Michigan State in their future. Hoping for a 7-5 season. Fingers crossed.

I must say I'm pretty damn proud of my Nittany Lions after last night. They played their hearts out and gave the Buckeyes a scare.
And as if the Buckeyes needed any help...
Watch the play clock. A full 3 seconds after time ran out

and
http://247sports.com/Bolt/Replay-fails-to-overturn-missed-call-in-Penn-State-game--32344158
Even after a review, they still called it an interception. Buckeyes then scored a TD.
How could they not see that on the instant replay?
Total of 10 points as a result of bad officiating
Next game at Happy Valley versus Maryland and I'll be there at Beaver Stadium :thumb:

If Auburn can win out, I'd love nothing more than to meet Oregon and FSU again in the playoffs!

My Ducks keep rolling along. But it was a costly win...losing two All-Americans (db and center) and an All-Conference player (TE), likely for the season really hurts. There must be something wrong with the turf at Eccles Field. Two Utes also went out with season ending injuries. All but one of these 5 injuries were non-contact. Here is a clip of the Ducks' TE injury. If you're squeamish about such things...do NOT open this video. https://vine.co/v/Oelm59vLDTp/embed
The Ducks have now lost their starting center, both starting offensive tackles and both of their backups, and starting offensive guard. It's amazing they can keep that offensive machine rolling. Most of the credit has to be due to the awesomeness of Marcus Mariota.
Also, if you want a really good laugh, check out this video from the game. It is THE weirdest play I've ever seen in college football!! Watch the entire clip, but especially from the 3:20 (minute/second) mark. Enjoy. http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2014/11/09/oregon_and_utah_s_crazy_play_kaelin_clay_s_fumble_leads_to_a_99_yard_ducks.html

Sounds like she needs her own TV.
Games on my watch list include Auburn/Alabama, Boise State/Utah State (of course) and Oregon/Oregon State although that one's almost a foregone conclusion...Ducks should easily prevail.

Looking a the top 25, the only ones that look like decent possibilities are GT-UGA, Old Miss-MSU and Min/Wisc. UVA and VT should be very close - though it might not be a very well played game.
edit - plus there's #11 UA(Arizona) vs #13 ASU

Did anyone watch Grambling vs. Southern University? Wild, high-scoring affair that saw time run out on an attempted QB sneak from the 6 inch line into the end zone for a tying TD. He was stood up in a massive struggle and you could see the time clock ticking down to zero just before he was pushed back and down behind the line. It was the best game I saw all year. Thrilling right down to the final whistle. Southern 52 - Grambling 45.

I,m nervous about the SEC championship game today.

I missed that game, but the Ducks have sure come into their own. Looks like they crushed Arizona.
Mariota is flat out great at what he does, plus I understand he's not full of himself, which is a nice attribute.
If you wanna see another at the top of his game, check out BSU's Jay Ajayi tonight against Fresno. He's a potent running back that has that "tractor" mentality. Drags his tacklers along with him for a couple of yards or even mows them down...a juggernaut!
-
Congratulations Nittany Lions!
Had to pleasure to be at Yankee Stadium last night to witness this win over Boston College in front of a sold out house where PSU fans outnumbered BC fans by 4 to 1. Felt as if Happy Valley was in the Bronx. Electric.
A big "thank you' to those seniors who decided not to leave once the NCAA applied its sanctions. Ecstatic that they get to leave their college football experience with a bowl win. Hard not to love this team.

Yesterday was a great day for college football. I love having all the traditional New Year's Day bowl games back on New Year's Day. One of the many things I did not like about the BCS was it broke up the New Year's Day I grew up with. We had a family bowl game trifecta. My oldest was a Duck, my youngest was a Horned Frog and I am a Mizzou Tiger.
Go Ducks!

You know the irony here? ... The old BCS system would have Alabama and FSU playing for the national championship. Hahahahahaaaaa

Absolutely!
I wonder what ESPN is going to do now.

I see the SEC jealousy is alive and well in this thread. No question the SEC West laid an egg this bowl season (Alabama's play calling was mind boggling), but the East is about to go 4-0 and 12 of the 14 teams are playing in a bowl game. Still the best conference top to bottom. The PAC 12 is close and the top 3 B1G teams are pretty good.
-
So pleased with my Spartans! But that game about gave me a heart attack. :hyper:
And their only losses were to the two teams playing for the national championship. Not bad, eh?

Hey, VL, I'm calling you out on this one! Notwithstanding Texas' attempt to turn the Big 12 into their own little cash cow, Mizzou sold their soul for TV money. The success the Tigers, and to a lesser extent A&M have had in the SEC was the first hint that the SEC wasn't all it was cracked up to be. The conference has long touted its own success, but some of those teams play patsies late in the year, I wonder if Vanderbilt didn't sweeten the pot to get Mizzou on board? That way the Commodores wouldn't have to carry the entire SEC conference football GPA all by themselves. BWHAHAHA!! :icon_twisted:
I live in Missouri and like Mizzou (my daughter is an alum), but by birth I'm an ACC fan, but I don't like all this conference musical chairs BS. Maryland in the Big Ten? Why?
I'm gonna miss the annual KU Rock Chock/Upchuck beatdown, as I've had some unpleasant experience with KU students and faculty who seem overcome by a sense of their own self-importance.
Let the flame wars begin!

TB, you could not be more wrong about Mizzou and how and why they are in the SEC. It is the best thing to ever happen to Mizzou athletics since the Big 8 sold its soul to Bevo and no one at Mizzou sold their soul. We are an equal with every other conference member, something that wasn't true in the Bevo 12. In the big 8 all were equal-not so in the big 12. Turning the big 8 into the big 12 was the worst thing that happened. Read the "100 Year Decision" by Chancellor Loftin. It's the story of how and why aTm is in the SEC and gives some insight into why Mizzou is in the SEC. Bevo tried twice to destroy the Big 12 by bolting for the PAC 12, once before NE and CO left and once after, with several other schools including OU and OSU, leaving MU, KSU, ISU and ku to fend for themselves, but the PAC 12 said no to the LHN. Nebraska couldn't wait to get away from Bevo and accepted a junior membership in the B1G which Mizzou rejected. Colorado couldn't wait to get away from Bevo and jumped to the PAC 12. Mizzou took charge of its own destiny and Brady Deaton was absolutely brillant in how he steered Mizzou to the SEC. As a result, the Tigers have had to step up their game from facilities, financial support for athletics, recruiting and on the field play and it is happening.
The SEC has seven national championships out of the last 8 years (9 counting this year). Everyone plays patsies, the other conferences do it at the beginning of the season. Is it head and shoulders better than the other conferences? no, but from top to bottom it has been and is the best football conference. As an alum, I am so thankful for Brady Deaton and his leadership. Mizzou could not be in a better position athletically and overall donations to the university are up too.
At first I thought I would miss the rivalry with ku, but I don't.
MIZ-SEC :thumb:
Happy New Year!
-
Well, looks like I touched a nerve! :o
You are 100% right about the Bevo 12, and having lived in Texas I think the shorthorns should get everything they deserve.
Of course Mizzou is doing well, and the credit goes to Gary Pinkel, not which conference they're in. When I moved to Missouri over 20 years ago Mizzou always seemed to struggle. Nevertheless I don't like conference switching. I really like regional competitions regardless, but then again I'm a lot older than you, and it seemed Maryland could never beat Penn State. Now both are in the B1G conference where they can't count. Let's see how that works out for the Terps.
-
Got to give some love to my Buckeyes. I played in the last Sugar Bowl in which OSU and Alabama faced each other and was on the other end of the stick of a good old fashioned butt whipping from the Tide. Last night was great redemption and brought back a lot of old memories and good old Woody Hayes stories amogst friends.
GO BUCKS!!!!!

Woody? Wasn't he the guy who punched a Clemson player? Nice move! :bang head:
OTOH, I could get to like you guys if you keep kicking Big Blue's ass.
Now, what other college FB fans can I piss off tonight??
-
Well, looks like I touched a nerve! :o

All in good fun.
Pinkel has done a great job, especially considering the awful state of the program when he arrived. Dan Devine was coach when I was an undergrad and the 60s were a great decade for Mizzou football. Only major college program to not lose more than 3 games in any year, 2 Big 8 championships, 2 Orange Bowls, a Sugar Bowl and curb stomping Alabama in the Gator Bowl. Those were the days when there were about a third of the bowl games today and 7-3 teams rarely received a bowl invitation. I miss the old big 8 and those rivalries. I never did like the big 12. In the early 80s, Mizzou hired a chancellor who deemphasized football, wouldn't support facility upgrades, hired two bad coaches in a row and the result was a 20 year sentence in football wilderness. A new chancellor brought Devine back to help resurrect the program and raise money for facility upgrades. Devine hired Larry Smith and he started the recovery and Pinkel has done a terrific job since he took over in 2001. I really like his approach and his emphasis on character as much as talent.
I agree with you about conference realignment. But once it started, it became a snowball rolling down the mountainside. Just like it doesn't seem right that OU, NE, MU etc aren't playing each other, it doesn't seem right that MD is not in the ACC, especially come BBall season.

tOSU definitely proved they belong in the championship game. Should be an interesting QB battle next spring between Braxton Barrett and Jones. How do you keep all 3 happy?

Yeah, and don't forget SMU's role in the demise of the SW Conference. Ever see that ESPN documentary series 30 for 30? They did a helluva job showing rampant Texas (not UT) stupidity involved with SMU's "death penalty" and the impact on the SW conference.
Yeah, the ACC is a hoops conference. Oh, well.
-
Really good point about SMU. I have seen a lot of 30 for 30, but not that one. Will have to look that one up.
I'm not a pig fan, but I sure enjoyed the beat down of ut in the Texas bowl.

Wow, that's awesome J Payton!
I imagine Bear Bryant was the coach of Alabama at that time? Wonder if in 20 to 30 years Meyer/ Saban will have the same mystique as Hayes/Bryant.
Nice to see OSU finally beat an SEC team in a big game! I think they got a good chance of beating Oregon, at least I'll be rooting for that to happen.
-
I believe Saban and Meyer will cement their place in history but it will certainly be a little different. The Bear and Woody coached strictly for the love of the game and money was a non issue. When Woody was fired he was the lowest paid coach in the Big 10 refusing to take pay increases because he didn't need the money. I believe he was making about 30k a year at the time. Those outside Ohio rarely understand what a great educator and philanthropist Woody was. He truly wasn't the tyrant he was portrayed as. Most influential person in my life.
-
For the record, I hope OSU beats Oregon. I've always believes the good football teams should come from the central U.S.
-
I'm in AZ so you would think I would root for the PAC 12 but Oregon always rubs me the wrong way. I guess it's that Phil Knight factor.
Besides, Ohio's been hurtin for a winner for a while now. :D

The desert heat must be getting to you, T2T. Oregon is sweet...and genuine...and lovable. Heck, I spent many summers in Hereford and I still like the Ducks. But then I had a lot of beer to keep me sane.
And where did all this tOSU love come from? We're the good guys.

Did you block for Ron Springs? ... a tough guy that left us too early.

Well, I have some family in Ohio who are diehard fans and I have coworkers that suffer being Browns/Cavs/Indians fans and who love OSU.
I hope it's at least a good game. I thought both Florida St. and Alabama had a decent defense but both got scored on pretty good so I'm hoping we don't get a blow out. Unless it's a shoutout! Then that could be fun!
I actually like Mariotta, kind of hoping the Cardinals look at him in the draft but he may be gone before they pick.
-

Ron was a senior and captain and I was merely a freshman that year but I absolutely blocked for him. He is sorely missed by the Buckeye community. He used to give me grief that I got all his touchdowns. In short yardage situations back in the day the fullback actually got to carry the ball believe it or not. I scored 13 TD's my freshman year.
-
tOSU definitely proved they belong in the championship game. Should be an interesting QB battle next spring between Baxter, Barrett and Jones. How do you keep all 3 happy?
Big talk about Braxton transferring to Oregon! I guess he sees the handwriting on the wall w/ regards to Barrett. Mariota will be leaving early for the league.
Where there's smoke .....

I went to Cal during those wonderful Marv Levy years (not). We didn't block for anybody...at any time...for any reason.
C'mon JP, 13 TD's was pretty darn good for a fb even back in the Dark Ages (especially for a frosh). Nice!!

Well, fellas. It's that time!!
ESPN has coverage ALL day Monday...up until game time.
I know you all are rootin' for my high flyin' Ducks...right? Right?! :D Well, maybe they're not flying...just limping along. For the game, the Ducks are missing their top 4 receivers, All-American left tackle, and All-American corner. Ugh. But they still have Mr. Heisman!
Go (wounded) Ducks! :bounce:

I live in Eugene Oregon and I am a Oregon alum so you know how I feel. I was really up for the game tonight until late last week. Two of our starting players were suspended for testing positive for smoking pot. Here we have two young men playing for one of the top teams in the nation about to play for a national championship and they throw that all away. They not only sabotaged their future but also their team. Disgusting
-
Well isn't it silly that we put so much importance (and money) into games played by college kids, most of whom have had their heads puffed up by fans, family, coaches, leaches, and the press. No wonder so many of them (and their "professional" cousins) live like total idiots.
That said I enjoy watching football and hope it's a good game (well played, well behaved players, with no major injuries, and not a blow out). I've got friends from both schools and although I'm a MSU fan, will root for the stylish Ducks. (Boy Dantonio didn't give anything away when interviewed by ESPN this AM.)
-
Well, I guess the game was interesting for a while in the 3rd qtr. Fairly disappointing....oh well.

Au Contrare. I was sweating the score down to the last play... had 60 points for the tie breaker in the annual family bowl game pot and my nephew had 72.
-
Congratulations to tOSU. They dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides. Great blocking schemes. EE had some truck size holes to run through. He also is a very strong and punishing runner. Jones throws an accurate ball, especially deep and is strong too. The early Oregon drops kept it from being a closer game, but the best team won.
Urban Meyer is clearly a great coach. He has done it at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and now tOSU. However, I thought it was classless to not take a knee on the one yard line at the end of the game in the last 30 secs and let the clock run out.
-
Congrats to the National Champion and better team.
Go....Bucks.

Probably because it was the Ducks.
Why the t in front of OSU?
-
"Why the t in front of OSU?"
It stands for "The" Ohio State University. In line with "The U" when alums refer to the University of Miami. College bravado.

If you go to their website you will see "The Ohio State University."

And Oregon State University. tOSU has called themselves that for a couple of years now.

Because they tend to run the score up on other teams plus they can score pretty fast. It's just my opinion. (Contrary to popular belief - I have been known to be wrong before!  )

It goes back to the late 1800s according to friends who went to school there. Part of the official name from the state legislature.

A couple thoughts...How many commercials is too many? Kinda disrupted the flow of the game IMHO. How can Ohio State keep digging up "second string" QB's that are as good if not better than the starter? No question Ohio State was clearly the best college team in the country, especially in the last month or so.... and they barely sneak into the play-off. TCU gets snubbed and FSU gets in. This would have been a good year for an 8 team play-off, even though OSU would have still come out on top. I'd eventually like to see an 8 team play-off, but certainly no more than 8. Eight is certainly a big enough pool to determine a true national champion. Four teams still somewhat leaves me with that crappy BCS feel.

They have not been known for "running up the score". They do score big, yes. In almost every game this season the Ducks have pulled their starting units early in the 4th quarter...including Mariota. Yep, you are wrong again. :icon_lol:

Agree. 8 teams seem just about right. BUT...they'd have to eliminate a game or two earlier in the season. These 15 games the two teams have played this year was brutal. Witness the Ducks without 6 starters for the CF game. tOSU was into their 3rd string qb. They for sure can't add another game on top of that to make it an 8 team playoff.

Congrats to the National Champion and better team.

:( Sorry your guys couldn't bring it home to the NW mud. For whatever reason whenever I flipped thru NBC last night I got commercials, so I didn't catch the game, wasn't sure where it was on the dial. Anyway, we'll keeps hopes up for next year, even if your QB heads to the bigs. :thumb:

I suspected as much. Oh well, I don't get all those fancy channels, used to, but they want too much $ anymore. 8)

Sucks that more and more big sports events are only available on non-broadcast channels. :nono:
