Finally finished all 4 CDs of Blues for Fisherman--wow.

Now onto a little Shelly Manne I picked up unopened at the used record store for $12.  It's really fun to open a 22 year old record and have it sound so amazing!

More Swinging Sounds

Alto Saxophone – Charlie Mariano
Bass – Leroy Vinnegar
Drums – Shelly Manne
Piano – Russ Freeman
Trumpet – Stu Williamson

Produced by Lester Koenig
Remastered by Phil De Lancie
Very clean German pressing from 1992

For you jazz enthusiasts of which I am one and have been for decades I give you a bright and lively recording of the man at his best.  By this time his back up men consisted of Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and 18 year old phenom Tony Williams on drums and it's a live recording.  I've read that Wayne Shorter was not available for the date and that Williams recommended his Boston home boy Sam Rivers to fill in on tenor and he's a fine contrast to the leaders' spirited playing.  I have this on CD and the sound is about as good as live recordings get.  Miles is such a beautiful ballad player and that is on display here big time.  Don't miss My Funny Valentine.  Of course, so are some very up tempo tracks on which Williams shines brightly and I like Rivers in contrast to Miles oh so beautiful tone.  The album is . .

Miles in Tokyo (Sony) and it just never gets old.

Miles in Tokyo

+1  :thumb:

Even better for those unaware, that Tokyo concert is included in this terrific box:

Disc 1 and the first part of Disc 2 contain the tracks from the two bands/sessions that constitute the "Seven Steps to Heaven" LP. The Los Angeles band/music is generally moody and very much focused on Miles' trumpet; the New York band is more inventive and active behind Miles. The music as mastered here is crystal clear.

Discs 2 and 3 contain the Antibes concert live in France, formerly released as "In Europe", now augmented with a "Bye Bye Blackbird" not previously available. The band swings their hardest on this concert, and it's a nice 90 minutes' worth of music that any Miles Davis fan will enjoy.

Discs 4 and 5 contain the famous NAACP benefit show from 1964 that resulted in 2 LPs worth of material ("My Funny Valentine" and "Four & More"), here for the first time put back into playing sequence and containing (a very nice version of) "Autumn Leaves". No Miles fan will want to be without this show as it is well-recorded, played with intensity, and contains definitive versions of a few tracks.

Disc 6 has Sam Rivers playing sax with the band live in Tokyo, replacing George Coleman who played on Discs 1 - 5.

Disc 7, live in Berlin, has Wayne Shorter finally entering the band.

Cannonball Adderly and band, with some cuts sung by Nancy Wilson. Not sure why she gets first billing. While Ms. Wilson has a nice voice and the cuts she sings are excellent, she clearly has a very limited range, and seems to have difficulty staying on key (IMO). Very enjoyable, but once she is out of the mix on the rest of the cuts Cannoball and the band catch fire. Some very excellent playing. And I do not recall Joe Zawinul sounding better on an acoustic piano - very nice playing.

(Saison Rue, by the Brewery out of CA - very nice beverage.)

It is contagious Jim, the beer that is. I'm drinking a Josephbrau Plznr. I discovered this beer at Trader Joe's. I like Pilsner Urquell a lot and also drink Gordon Biersch's Czech Style Pilsner and found out that TJ's Plsner is brewed at Biersche's brewery. 5.99 a sixer. Cheap thrills baby! Almost TGIF time!  8)

Hey, I think you can get a shot for that at the local CVS by the way ...

Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown. A better, more natural fit this one (stick the jazz singer chick with a famous jazz player and see what happens).
It's turning out to be a chick-jazz-singer kinda night I guess ... sweet ...

Just finished these first two Miles Davis discs from "The Original Mono Recordings" box set (which contains his first nine 12-inch Columbia albums)

Think I'll listen to as many from the box as am able during work today. Not a bad way to spend a Friday at work.
