Modded by yours truly for 3-way active use, powered by Bryston 7B-SSTs for the bass and Quicksilver V4 tube amps for the rest.

Hi Nils,

Is that MG 3.6? What kind of covers (cloth) is that? Seems to be a lot more transparent than normal Mangepan covers.

 Wow! What are they like?

Being the largest of the Sound Lab family with 3124 square inches (each) of radiating membrane, they move a lot of air! And they are the most efficient and easiest to drive. Exciting all the air in the room results in a very natural presentation that can be enjoyed anywhere in the room and beyond. No beaming. And the bass response  is lower (24hz) than the smaller models. For a planar lover, they are heaven!

the tv is for blu-ray and dvd audio, but the system is intended for audio.

emerald physics cs 1.3's with amplification by modwright and ampzilla.  i've just finished recabling with spatial computer's "quantum field" cable.  not visible:  a spatial computer "black hole" unit.

the system is still breaking in.  it replaces a pair of apogee divas and a big hot krell monster.

due in soon:  a pair of subs from nathan funk.

Not only is your system beautiful, so is your backyard!

Welcome Legis,
Glad to see a fellow builder from the DIY Audio Forum here.  BTW, your post doesn't mention that you built those awesome speakers yourself.   :thumb:

Hi Jazzman, the ESLs were built by Crescendo Systems, but I basically did reconstruct the stat panels (insulation of the stators, new membrane, new spacers) my self. Woofers are fully DIY :).

Andy,

Charlie has an excellent write-up on his terrific ESL project here:

kiwi,

You photo looks like it's from a magazine.  You ever have any empty pizza boxes and beer bottles floating around that listening room?  :)

Dave.

LoL.   I cleaned them all up before taking the photo!    When listening (rather than photo taking) a can of beer is not far away.

Pics of my Carver AL-IIIs & Carver/Sunfire system.  I've removed the passive crossovers & am running fully active setup.

I've modified the AL-IIIs substantially.  Original woofer replaced with Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1:

...installed stainless blind T-nuts & hex-head bolts w/star washers:

...replaced the original crossover panel:

...with custom stainless steel panels (please excuse the fingerprints!):

Custom made Carver labels top & bottom:

My latest acquisition. 2.7's! Love the bass! Looking forward to moving up to a bigger solid state amp.

New JansZen zA2.1 hybrid ESLs.  Just got these set up this past weekend.  So far they sound great.  Don't be fooled by their size.  They can play big.  The wide photo angle is distorting the cabinet shape at the edges just a little.  Sorry.

How do you find the JansZens to be compared to your 1.7s now that they're in your home?

The JansZens are so different than Maggies in so many ways that comparisons may not be relevant and against the 1.7s the price makes it an unfair fight.

We can't help ourselves however when we get something new to compare against the incumbent. On sound alone:

1. The JansZen's ESL panels top any Maggie on midrange and high frequency clarity and realism. I have heard more than one Maggie with the true ribbon tweeter and my comment stands. I think any properly designed ESL takes this point. The ESL approach was what caught my attention to begin with.  :thumb:
2. The JansZens can play much louder and without distortion despite their small size.
3. The JansZens have a much wider sweetspot than the 1.7s. I used my 1.7s with the tweeters in, and that I know narrowed the spot to one seat. Still, point to the JansZens.
4. The soundstage seems wider with the JansZens and is different.   Placement plays a large part here and the 1.7s demanded a very different placement.
5. The Maggies have a taller soundstage, but this is only in my small room. I tried the JansZens briefly also in my large family room and from across the room the stage was huge. They are tilted back for time allignment, but this also raises the stage over distance.
6. The 1.7s and the JansZens both are rated at bass to 40Hz. I have a lot yet to listen to so I'll hold off on bass comments. Both have excellent bass qualities but obviously very different approaches.
7. Both speakers are totally seamless across the full frequency range.

$7500 versus $2000, that's a bit of a difference so it might be an apples and oranges kind of thing.
They certainly would help with the dreaded WAF as long as she didn't see the price tag.  The wives I've had tend to get an itchy trigger finger at around the $1000 mark and look at me all squint eyed which I don't think is very nice of them.
Congratulations on your purchase!
