$100 for hd-dvd HD-A2

Shows you how to order a Toshiba HD-A2 for $99 with a 10% off coupon, so it should be about $100 with shipping (+ tax).

Otherwise, Walmart has it for sale for $98 this morning, but then you have to deal with going to Walmart.

It is only 1080i, but for the price, I could not resist.  I still may get a blu ray player, when they get cheaper.

You can also get one from Walmart right now (in-store only) for $99. They have a secret sale that started/starts at 8am.

Limited quanity per store.

Thanks for the tip, guys!  Picked one up from Walmart this morning. Our local W. has about six of them...might have to get a spare as well ; )

Here is a rebate form for 5 free HD DVD's

It does not appear to matter where you bought the player from.

Apparently Best Buy oversold the players, and are cancelling orders.

My order shows "in process", but I don't know if it will work or not.

And by now, the two Walmarts within 30 minutes of me have sold out, so I can just wait and see.

Best Buy does have the HD-A3 for $200 with 7 free movies, but it does not seem to offer anything more than the A2 for me, so I will wait and see what happens.

I got to my local Wal-Mart too late, but the electonics worker said there were about 50 in line at 7:00 (a full hour before the sale began!). That's quite a response.

I've done a bit of research...

1. Amazon and Crutchfield are now selling the HD-A2 for $129. (5 free with mail in rebate).

2 Sears is price matching (+10% discount), so if they have any HD-A2s left, print out the Wal-Mart ad and bring it in... you'll then get the HD-A2 for about $89.

3 Best Buy is selling the HD-A3 for $199 (5 free with mail in rebate). The kicker here is you also get to pick 2 HD-DVD's of your choice off the shelf (34.99 or less) for free, plus the HD-A3 comes with 300 and Bourne Identity in the box. So, for $100 more, you get 4 additional movies... if you would have purchased them, then the deal is just as good as the one at Wal-Mart. This can be done in store or over the internet with in-store pick-up.

The A2 and A3 players aren't the best, but they get the job done and are at this point dirt cheap. One thing to remember, if you don't have HDMI inputs on your receiver, the A2 outputs only DTS (no DD) over toslink whereas the A3 only outputs DD (no DTS) over toslink. Depending on your receiver or integrated amp, that may be a concern.

Do any of you want me to pick one up at my local Walmart this afternoon? I'll be heading there a bit later...not sure if any are left, but if you want me to pick one up and send it your way, let me know.

Well...they were all gone. Supposedly by mid-morning.
I'd say if Toshiba/Microsoft were hoping to spark some interest in HD DVD, they probably succeeded.

Now, if Sony would launch a BR player around the $1 bone mark...
