Alternatives to soundbars
« on: 23 Sep 2020, 01:38 am »
My soundbar sucks.  It's actually a pretty reputable brand, but in the bedroom, the sound quality is marginal.  I guess I could shuck out for one of the really nice soundbars on Crutchfield etc, but the thought occurred to me that I could use a pair of KEF LSX speakers or Klipsch The Fives.  Any other smart powered wireless speakers I should be taking a look at?  Devialet is out of my price range.

Thanks in advance!

I really like the Roon Ready https://www.bluesound.com/products/pulse-soundbar/ for what I use it for.  Just some TV and Roon when I'm working.

Buy a used AVR or 2ch receiver and get a pair of Elac debut 5.2's or 6.2's if you want more bass.

I use an old JVC AVR and a pair of Def Tech Promonitor 1000's and a pair of Monitor Audio S1's in another system.  If you have a sub, Martin Logan bookshelf's have crystal clear sound and are great with voices.

There are many choices out there. You could go with a pair of active Pro Studio Monitors from approximately $200/pair (when on sale) up to tens of thousands of dollars. JBL, Kali, Focal, KRK to name a sliver of what's out there.

Or you could get a pair of powered speakers from AudioEngine, Elac, Dynaudio, Sonos, SVS, Kanto.

To get a flavor for the first check out Sweetwater or ZZ Sounds websites. For the second look at Crutchfield.

What's your price point?

The KEF LSX speakers or Klipsch The Fives would be my short list picks. Given the 'soundbar' reference I presume this is for use with a HDTV. Both the LSX and Fives feature HDMI-ARC (audio return channel) inputs for proper TV to Hi-Fi compatibility circa 2020.

There is the B&W Formation series, but more wireless centric and no HDMI-ARC. And Formation prices in the Devialet range. Dynaudo has their Focus XD and Xeo range but again no HDMI-ARC even if one adds the Connect base station. Buchardt Audio appears poised to make a big impact with their new A500 and pending A700 systems. Alas again the HDMI-ARC input is only available via the Base station accessory so that starts at 3750 euros. Given the rave review here (https://youtu.be/tctB_Dfmv4s) that seems a good deal if the A500 is your main system. A little spendy for a bed room.

Speaking of rave reviews, KEF's revealed just this week META technology looks VERY interesting (https://youtu.be/oKTYvP7YQ0Q). META is already in the LSXs now shipping.

So if it were me and given the fantastically curiated main system you list on your https://thecluelessaudiophile.com/the-kit/ site (Rossi & Volti you picked the good ones that end in 'i') KEF LSX speakers or Klipsch The Fives. For lower cost and classic midcentury modern styling I would go with The Fives. If budget and decor taste permitted LSX META to be first on the block to sample acoustic metamaterial tech in HiFi.

Powered speakers. Lots to choose from. Audio Engine, Vanatoo, Bose. Not a dealer of such.

I listened to almost miniscule Vanatoos at the Tampa Audio Show and they were shocking.  Amazing and full sound from two small cubes.  Now that I recall, I will look them up again!  Thanks for the recommendation.

Hahaha!  Using my own post against me! :)  I have a main AV system in our living room that is staffed with Denon AVR, all sorts of Martin Logan in-walls, with presence speakers I think it's 9.1.  Great for movie night.  But when the wife and I are watching TV in the bedroom, I have to come up with a better solution than the soundbar.  So thanks so much for the recommendations, which validated my pre-existing bias! :)

Thanks so much
Matthew
