Title: Trouble shooting a new DAC
Post by: Denton J on 19 Sep 2023, 08:32 pm
I just added a DAC with a tube output stage going to a Denefrips amp.  The source is a Cambridge streamer.  Adding the DAC, every time I start a song there is a noticeable pop.  It's a single pop.  I changed cables from the streamer to the DAC but it's still there.

If I remove the DAC, and plug the Cambridge directly into the amp, there is no pop.

What can be causing the pop? I'm guessing it's a grounding issue but I'm not sure how I fix this.

A lot of dacs will have this pop/click/tick/toc when switching file types. The Schiit Bifrost I had for a while and my MHDT Labs Atlantis both do a type of click that you're calling out. Nothing obscene but a noticable click. The Schiit had a muting relay to avoid big clicks and pops when an input mode was unlocked so the unit itself clicked. My MHDT has a small click through the speakers due to no muting relay. Not a concern, just a change in file types or bitrate of the file is all.
