Title: Breathe C Tour, Giveaway, and also LOOK AT MY DOG!!!!
Post by: Pez on 6 Feb 2021, 10:13 pm
This is music as it should be heard.” - WGH

There is a refreshing clarity of detail with these cables in my system.” - kmate

Pez is a big jerk and has an unlikable disposition.” - Tyson

The first round of Hapa reviews are in and I think the results speak for themselves. I’m very happy that ACers are enjoying the Hapa sound!

I am very excited to use the positive reviews as a springboard for one of the products that I am most proud of.

Here it is! Breathe C. Using our signature DCS Geometry, high purity ultra fine Angel Hair copper litz, and KLE Copper Harmony connectors we cut no corners when it comes to quality!

Breathe C Tour and Giveaway

I’m really excited to announce Breathe C; Hapa’s all out assault on raising the bar on the price/performance ratio. With Breathe C my goal was to create a giant killer and I want you to deicide if I’ve hit the mark.

What is Breathe C?
Breathe C is nothing less than the aggregate of what we have learned with our higher end designs. Taking our understanding of high end cable design and attacking with a killer price point.

Using our Angel Hair litz copper, teflon and our sophisticated DCS Geometry, Breathe C is every bit as meticulously made and sexy as it’s kin Breathe S.

The Tour:
We are sending out 3 cables. two 1 meter length pairs and one 2 meter length pair. By signing up, you are agreeing to testing out these cables in your setup(s). This includes sharing your impressions, review, and photos (2-3 please!) of the Breathe C cables in your system to be posted in this thread. To help speed things along there will be an Eastern US tour and a Western US tour that will be done in parallel.

Rules: Once you have tried them out in your system for a one week period (7 days) you are agreeing to pack them up and send them on to the next recipient. Generally the cost of shipping is approximately $15-$25 depending on the courier service used. The cost of shipment is the onus of the sender.

Click here and fill out our form to register, once the tour has 5 people eastern (let's be generous and say anyone in Texas/North Dakota or further east is 'Eastern' :thumb: ) and 5 western the tour West side tour is full! is filled so be quick! TOUR FULL

The Giveaways:
That’s right! GIVEAWAYS as in multiple! Three giveaways of 6 pairs of cables to be exact!

The Tour Giveaway- By registering and being accepted for the tour you are automatically entered into the tour giveaway! Once the tour has concluded, we will be giving away one 2 meter pairs of the Breathe C cables. There will be a random drawing for Eastern US tour and one for the Western US tour so two winners total!

The “I’m in!” Giveaway- This one’s easy. By posting ANYTHING to this thread you are automatically entered! Your first post is your entry so no need to spam. The giveaway for this will be a 1 meter pair of Breathe C cables. There will be a random drawing for the two winners. (note: Tour members are ineligible for the “I’m in!” Giveaway)

The Instagram Giveaway- Another easy one! follow this link for details: https://www.instagram.com/p/CK93XJBAMAS/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

2. Like the post.
3. Tag a friend below! (more tags in separate comments = more entries!).

Note: The Instagram Giveaway is for anyone and everyone! Tour members included!

THE DOG:
This is my dog, her name is Copper. No I'm not joking (my wife picked the name!) No the Breathe C(opper) are not named after her, unless you really REALLY want them to be, then yes, they are named after her.  :thumb: And finally, yes, she LOVES the sound of the cables, but they are too springy to be a good chew toy. She prefers power cords.  :P

So that’s it! Let the games begin and please do not hesitate to send me a PM if you have any questions.

Good luck with the cable tour.

So rather than test each cable individually...

That’s 8 meters end to end per channel. No noise and sounds gorgeous! Next they’re going on the cooker for some pre-tour dielectric forming.

Over the past 5 years I have owned and evaluated a conga line of cables ranging from foils, commercial helix designs, liquid metal, stranded and solid OCC Copper and Silver conductors retailing in excess of $5K and they all had positive attributes.

As an avid DIYer/tweaker and the builder of 5 variations of the Helix Design, mines are configured with KLE Absolute Plugs, 1 run of Neotech OCC Solid Silver/1% Gold and 1 run of Neotech OCC Solid Silver as the signal and a double run of Mil-Spec Silverplated Copper as the neutral which is known as the Schroeder Method “SM” and in my opinion has been the best sounding cables I have ever heard in my system regardless of cost…

My audio (signal) senses went up another level when I saw the launch of Hapa Audio and I immediately delved into the technology of his DCSG - Dual Chirality Star Geometry which went much further in reducing crosstalk and inductance but would I be able to discern any difference over my already phenomenal sounding DIY Helix cables?

The Hapa Audio Breathe C Tour Cables arrived in excellent condition and presented in a very professional manner with the Hapa Logo on the internal box and 3 sets of cables individually secured with Velcro straps and protected in nice cloth-type draw string bag; very classy. The cables build quality are outstanding and are very flexible and almost weightless.

After 4 days of continuous burn-in, I was eager to hear the DCSG typology in my system with my own ears and with the music I typically listen to; Classical Acoustic Guitar, Violin, Cello and some Jazz.

Cued up 5-7 CDs of my favorite string instruments (play so often, the kids hum the notes : ) and was AMAZED! Tonality was the first thing I noticed with the Breathe C, Acoustic Guitar’s/Cello’s sounded fuller with more body, resonances, decay and “REALISM” …    The instruments themselves were more life-like in size/scale and had an intricate and delicate sound that was not present with my previous cables.

After many A/B comparison between my DIY Silver/Gold Helix and Hapa Audio, the Breathe C just has more transparency and clarity without any brightness, forwardness or harshness. What you hear is a much wider/deeper and expansive soundstage, tighter image focus, better layering and the “chameleon illusion” as if your speakers are not even there…The level of detail and fluidity you hear between and beyond the boundaries of your loudspeakers with the Breathe C is quite astonishing and with the Beauty of Copper…

Being that the DCSG typology is similar to my DIY Helix Coax, I decided to try the Breathe C as a digital cable. My DIY Helix Coax has the same cabling as mentioned above but the coatings have been stripped off (naked) and placed inside 2 separate Teflon tubes and lightly twisted together. This “Air” Version yields better separation, better detail retrieval, more air and better image focus. The moment I inserted the Breathe C into the mix, I noticed the same attributes of textural body, resonances and a beautiful organic naturalness that exuded from wood-based instruments that the analog cables provided…

The supplies to build a DIY Helix Cable will cost you north of $230+ depending on your choice of conductors and that does not take into account all of the labor necessary to build a quality sounding cable. Hapa Audio Breathe C is more than worth the price of admission and at a price to performance ratio, the Breathe C wins hands down…

As with all cables, it comes down to system “synergy” and listener preferences but I can say without hesitation that the Breathe C is the best sounding cable I have heard in my system and I have owned and evaluated over 25+ brands…

If you are looking for a reference quality cable utilizing the latest techniques with proven noise/crosstalk rejecting, the finest Angel Litz Copper with vibration damping properties, I would highly recommend that you give Hapa Audio Breathe C or their other versions a try; As for me, my system will be outfitted with Hapa Audio Breathe C…  :D

Excellent review. Your observations on the sonic strengths of the Breathe C match to a tee what I experienced with the Breathe S. Images just seem to float in a more expansive ambient sound stage. This in turn opens the door to a presentation that simply sounds more natural and real. The clues you mention like "resonance", "body" and "decay" are all there in spades. FWIW, I bought a second Breath S last week. Life is too short to miss out on a little treasure like this  :thumb:

The world's 3 greatest inventions so far 1)The wheel.  2)Sliced Bread.  3)Hapa Audo Breathe C interconnects. Alright , that may be a little over the top, but the Breathe C cable is truly amazing.
My name is Bob and I started the East side of the Breathe C tour.  I was perfectly happy with my present interconnects.  Neutral, full sounding, fairly detailed and balanced.  But you know this hobby(addiction)-
I am always curious to try something new.  I've reading about the great reviews Pez's(Jason's) interconnects were getting.  Then he launched his copper cable. I figured- what do I have to lose.  The geometry and the material looked very intriguing.  At heart, I'm as copper guy.  I just think voices and certain instruments sound more natural through copper.  I prefer a full bodied sound that copper provides probably
better than silver. Of course the drawback is that sometimes copper seems "slower" and you lose detail as opposed to silver. And the cable was very reasonably priced in case I liked it.
Anyway, I simply was not expecting what I heard.  I was blown away.  The beautiful rich tone was there but so was the detail and speed.  These cables are in no way slow. I know Wig a little bit and always
respected his opinion of anything audio.  He has a great ear.  I texted him and asked him if he heard what I was hearing. He started the West part of the tour.  He agreed.  We both agreed that audiophiles
are going to LOVE these interconnects.  The price point is ridiculously low.  It is very hard to get this kind of sound for anywhere near this price point(if at all).  They make your system sound Beautiful.
Now, I don't work for Hapa Audio.  I just know a good thing when I hear it and want to pass it along to the audiophile community.  That's what I like about this hobby- a lot of people are
willing to share. I've tried a fair amount of cables but not as many as a lot of you. I haven't tried Pez's other cables yet that get great reviews.  They may be better than the Breathe C's or may fit
your system better.  I know if he made it- it's worth a listen.  I know for a fact these Breathe C's are certainly something you should experience.

Great review JM!

I can vouch for Bob's enthusiasm as we are good friends and listen to each other's systems often.  Never has Bob been this excited over a particular improvement in his system as he has been for the Hapa copper ICs--he has called me at least 3 times and I checked back with him a couple times.  Everytime he would wax with excitement at what these cables were doing for his system!  For those who don't know, Bob is a tone whore as to his most important characteristic part of sound.  He's actually converting me some in that direction.  I will be hearing the Breathe S cables very soon in his system--looking forward to it and I will make some personal impressions on what I'm hearing at that point.

First off I'd like to Thank Jason for the incredible offer of trying the Breathe C in my system.
Unfortunately with all I've got on my plate at the moment I wasn't able to get into them like
I did the Quiescence (love that cable). I'd have to agree with most written so far and has
made me want the Q all the more. C will find it's way into a strong market in it's price range
as a quite competent competitor.

Ok, here are my impressions of the Breathe C from the western tour.  These impressions are a follow-up to the review I posted a few weeks ago regarding the rest of the Hapa lineup here: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=173888.msg1844603#msg1844603

In that review, I found the Quiescence silver and silver/gold to be some real next-level stuff in terms of absolute fine detail and completely holographic soundstage.  They suffered a little or a lot in terms of thinness of the sound, though, with the silver/gold being warmer and a bit less thin of a sound.

The Breathe S, in comparison, was quite a bit thicker/meatier than the Quiescence, but at the expense of detail.

I've had the Breathe C in my system since Sunday.  I had a session on Sunday where I compared the Breathe C to my DIY Zenwave D3 cables and formed an initial impression.  Then I had a very busy week and didn't get around to listening again until this afternoon.  But the Breathe C have stayed in the system the entire week and had music playing through them 24/7, to give them the best opportunity to shine.

After both Sunday's initial session and this afternoon's, my sense is that the Breathe C shares much in common with the Breathe S.  It has that same meatier/weightier sound in comparison to my D3's that the Breathe S had.  It also sounded a bit veiled in comparison, with the D3's letting through more detail, and individual instruments sounding cleaner and clearer.  Voices and instruments also have more focus with the D3, whereas the Breathe C smeared them a bit.

But the Breathe C is also supremely musical.  It has a very nice weighty sound, and while it sounds a bit slow and dull at low listening levels compared with the D3's, it loves it when you crank the volume.  It has a very coherent sound, and is incredibly smooth.  You won't hear any hint of glare coming from the Breathe C.

These impressions were formed using pretty much the same songs as I used my original review linked above.  I don't really think the Breathe C did justice to Sarah Chang - Le quattro stagioni (Vivaldi: The Four Seasons), but it showed its virtues on the rest.  I also liked it a lot on Ray Lamontagne's Till the Sun Turns Black album - perhaps better overall than my D3's.

But the D3's are more dynamic than the Breathe C by quite a margin - in fact I have to turn my volume up a couple clicks to match the same perceived volume with the Breathe C in the system.  And since I do almost all my listening at very low volumes while either studying or late evening after the toddler has gone to bed, the D3 are a better fit for my lifestyle while also probably having the overall better performance between the two across all the various categories.

In sum, I agree that the Breathe C perform very well for their price point and at that price point offer significant competition to very high parts quality and design quality DIY ICs.  They have many virtues and have a character that will shine well in most systems out there.

Hey Folks,
First, I apologize for the late reply, I thought I replied earlier, but apparently I either didn't hit 'post' or internet gremlins ate the message.

Big thanks to Don for posting up some of his impressions, I realize how crazy things are for you at the moment so I'm all the more grateful that you took time to evaluate.

Everyone else, thank you for taking the time! Glad to see you all aren't afraid to put them up against the big boys.  :thumb:

I'd like to thank Jason for sending out 3 sets of his new Breathe C cables.  During the week that I had his cables I was able to try them in both my main system and my headphone system.  I was very impressed with the build quality of the cables.  They look beautiful and are very flexible in use.   The KLE RCAs are a big plus too! Most cables in this price range would not use such a high quality connector.

In my main system I used 2 sets, the first between my DAC and Preamp and the second between my Preamp and Amp.  In this system, I thought that the tonality of the cables was spot on, with very strong bass and a smooth top end.  The soundstage was a slightly recessed compared to my DIY silver cables, but instrument placement was much more focused than the silver cables.  It was very easy to pinpoint exactly where every instrument was.  The leading edge of dynamic sounds was a touch muted compared to the silver cables.

In my Headphone system I used the Breathe C between my DAC and Headphone Amp. I typically listen with Sennheiser HD-800 headphones on this system. If you are familiar with the Sennheiser HD 800 you will know it is a hard headphone to match to any system.  I put up with it's harsh high end because they have the most 3d sound of any headphone system I've tried.  Fortunately, the Breath C was exquisite on this system.  Installing the Breathe C was a breath of fresh air - it cured the high end nasties on this headphone and produced the lushest sound I've heard from this system yet.   Using Audeze LCD-XC cans the sound was strong and dynamic and very dense without being bloated.  A true winner!

IMHO the Breathe C cables are a very good all-around cable that would suit the needs of most people. The exhibit the qualities one would expect from a high end copper cable.   There are other cables that are more holographic, dynamic, detailed or have more extension, but you will be paying more for these cables.  Much more.

Folks,
Due to popular demand, I am now including the option to upgrade to the KLE Absolute Harmony connectors with Breathe C. I am combining the best KLE connector with Mundorf Supreme gold/silver content solder. The improvements are tremendous. Cleaner top to bottom performance, added dimensionality and a robustness that is really nice.

Krustykat, thanks again for taking the time to review the Breathe C cables. I'm looking forward to sending you the TOP SECRET cable I'm working on for you. When it's complete and you have it, I think folks here would love to see what we've cooked up.  :green:

Hapa Audio Breathe C update with KLE Absolutes

Guys,

I have had my updated Breathe C cables in my system now for 2 weeks and the upgraded version with Absolutes is the way to go in bringing out more beauty of Hapa’s DCSG Topology. I am hearing more immediacy, more transparency/clarity, quicker leading edges and faster transients with images being more immersive and bolder.

If you liked what you heard with the standard RCA’s, you are really going to like them even more with Absolutes… :thumb:

Wig  :D

Any plans for a Breathe C XLR version?

Great question, for XLRs I have a few designs that I am testing currently. I will say this, no it will not be based on the same geometry as the Breathe/Quiescence line. it is a geometry specific to a balanced signal. I hope to have it ready for primetime sometime in Q2. Keep your eyes open.

Wig,
Thanks for comments on the Absolute Harmony sonics. Everyone should know Wig has a lot to do with me offering the upgrade to Absolute Harmony and so far he's been right, a lot of folks are going that direction. Regarding the sonics, you nailed it. The Absolutes are my favorite connector of all time and well worth the upgrade. The sonics achieved by it and the special attention to the Mundorf Supreme solder are what I prefer for literally every RCA style I make.

They're on their way to the next person. I really enjoyed listening to them very much. I'm really busy with online projects through Sunday night and I work all day Monday so it'll be Tuesday at latest before I will write a full report.

I would have liked to have kept them. It made listening at volume (80+ db) more enjoyable than my present IC's.

Cables just showed up here today and I just sat down to listen to a few songs before reluctantly back to housework. Firstly I would like to say thank you again for the opportunity, and follow that up with "Are you freaking kidding me?" First impression is simply mind blown. I'm going to get some a/b listening this week on both digital and vinyl. I might even find some good industry buzzwords to throw out writing about them next week. For now, just know there is a big smile on my face as I attempt to make my ears bleed.  :thumb:

I'll do a quick summary and then expound more below. The first thing that I noticed was how surprisingly lightweight these things are. I used only one cable from my USB/SPDIF (XMOS XU208) converter to my AVA Ultra DAC. (Odyssey Tempest pre > AVA Synergy 240 amp) I kept the music playing all afternoon without paying attention to differences. In the evening, I was really enjoying them. They really seemed to deepen the soundstage and recordings seemed to have a greater “spaciousness” compared to my Morrow MA3's and Grover Huffmann EX and EX+s. Meaning that it sounds more like the performance is being played in a room rather than instruments floating in space. Overall, they sounded “smoother”. By that I mean they didn't sound as harsh. But it seemed to come at the expense of a little less leading edge snap to the bass notes, i.e. plucked bass and the stick hitting the drums. There also seemed to be a comparatively roll off of the bass and overall less bass there. It seems to be the trade off for having a slightly less “harsh” sound, most often noticeable when a singer sings the “s” sound. This is listening to loud levels as I said in my previous post, more than 80 db average as register by my phone app. (Yeah, I know.) Overall, I really did like them enough that I would like them in my system.

*

OK, this is the long version. I'm on a perpetual budget so I generally buy used, having champagne ears on a beer budget. I feel that most designers/manufacturers are older guys who have spent years listening to loud music and I suspect (but probably can't verify) that their high frequency hearing is diminished. The reason that I bring this up is because over the recent years, I've seem to notice that newer equipment, both electronics and speakers, tends to have, to my ears, be a bit too bright/harsh in the higher frequencies. Sometimes known as clarity. (This also includes digital harshness. I am also very aware that much of the sound is determined by the room especially when listening loudly.) I've had this present system with the Philharmonic Audio New Philharmonitor (with RAAL tweeter) for many years now. I have 10K+ songs in my computer of which I've heard each album probably around 100 times. Over the years, I've selected a certain number of songs which I have put into my Best Sound playlist which I use as references. As it's extraordinarily difficult for me to even tolerate listening to new music (from the last 30-40 years), my choice of good sounding recordings are probably not the best that's out there. I like to crank up my favorites, so sometimes that volume has to be limited to when that harshness becomes too intolerable to me. (At low volumes, I have no problems listening to music out of a crappy, tabletop radio for hours.) So for example, I use Fleetwood Mac's Worried Dream off of The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac as a fabulous test of voice. He is right there in the room. Wow. (Piano and drums are ok, the other instruments, meh.) I love Year of the Cat. I use that to see how loud I can get before the sax and guitar solo irritates me – and there is always a volume limit to when that will happen. The sax and guitar were far more tolerable to listen to with the Hapas. On a couple of songs, there would be some instrument that would be more “there” that kind of surprised me. I'd always “heard” it but it would be much more prominent. Unfortunately, I didn't take note of what instrument and which song that happened.

Before I received the Hapas, I had bought GR Research Audio Nirvana speaker cables. Turning up the volume, even my Best Sound playlist sounded intolerable with my IC's. I thought that I needed maybe to break the GR's in. I listened for many hours at lower volumes to break them in before the Hapas came in. After I received the Breathes, they didn't seem to be better but I listened to them loud for one session and they were much better. But I decided to try to keep breaking them in because they had some more wonderful characteristics than my other speaker cables Knukoncepts Karma Kable. But alas, maybe I need much more time on the GR speaker cables because high frequency harshness at volume was still somewhat bothersome. In other words, I could listen to the Karmas at a louder level without cringing. Again, I goofed by not taking notes on these differences.

My last night with them, I put in the MA-3 between the SPDIF converter and the DAC and some of the high frequency harshness returned (again at 80+ volume) but so did a little more bass but still much preferred the Breathe. When I tried the EX+ there, a slight HF harshness came back when a singer would emphasis 's' in the lyrics. I put the Breathe back in that position and put the EX+ between the pre-amp and the amp. I forgot to make notes (it's Tues. and that was Friday night) but I seem to remember that I enjoyed that combination.

One other slight shortcoming with them is no signal, they picked up a local radio signal that went away when I used just one pair of my other IC's.

To sum up, outside of the minor issues with the bass, I really enjoyed my time with the Breathes and thank Jason and Hapa so much for the opportunity to listen to them. I'll have to see if I can budget a couple pair as 3 sets are too much expense for me.

I know I was supposed to take photos of them but my room's a bit of personal embarrassment so here's the back with my rack pulled out.

One thing that I noticed about the cables however was the small contact strip. Wouldn't a larger surface area make a difference? I'm not sure but I guess that it's just the negative/ground and only needs to be minimal.

Char,
You did quite a bit of experimenting with the cables. Sounds like it was mostly a positive experience. It's not always easy to determine where high frequency harshness is coming from, but if you have any gear that isn't fully broken in, odds are that's your culprit.

Regarding the KLE connectors. The design is intentionally low mass and especially the common pin. The purpose is to reduce the potential for Eddy current issues that all full metal ring style barrel connectors have. This was a brilliant design solution by Mr Eichmann and is partially responsible for the clarity and dynamics of the cables design.

Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts! I really appreciate it.  :thumb:

Just wanted to give an update with my experience with Jason's cables.  I was part of the Breathe C tour. Absolutely loved them.  But, of course, I was curious to try his other cables. He sent me the Breathe S
and the Quiescence S.  He did not have the material to send me the Quiescence GS.  All are very good cables with their own characteristics.  Both the Breathe S and the Quiescence S offered more detail
than the Breathe C.  Between those 2 I preferred the Quiescence S because it added a little more warmth than the Breathe S.   Detail is important to me but I kept going back to the Breathe C's.  The just sounded right  IN MY SYSTEM. I could certainly see many people favoring the other ones.  So I listened to 2 very smart audiophiles (Jason & Wig) and ordered the Breathe C's with the Absolute Kle connectors.
Bingo! The tone was still there but with more detail and clarity. I was not second guessing myself about not getting the Quiescence S.  I really didn't believe the Absolute connectors would make that much difference. As Wig stated- there was a nice increase in clarity, immediacy and faster transients. The background detail is more pronounced/bolder.
Still the nice tone, but just "more" of everything you want in a cable.   Simply more of the "you are there" quality.  FOR MY SYSTEM - for wonderful.
It would have been interesting if Jason sent out the "regular" Breathe C cables along with the ones with the Absolute Kle connectors.  I'm curious what the reaction might be from the rest of the people on the tour.  Anyway, I'm looking forward to any future products from Hapa Audio.

When the tour is done stay tuned, I've got quite a few exciting things coming.

First off, I’d like to thank Pez for doing a demo-tour for his new Breathe C interconnects. It was perfectly timely for me, as I had just started to do a little research into ICs again, after a handful of years of owning some ‘basic’ cables.

Over the past 10 years, I’ve owned ICs at the $750 price point, $1500 pp and even the $2000 pp. I always ended up thinking these various brands either accentuated an aspect of the frequency spectrum or had a noticeable coloration of some sort. After moving house and redoing the system and room a few years ago and through to now, I decided to go simple and have been using Duelund wire ICs w/ either Duelund or KLE Absolute Harmony connectors, as well as another brand’s entry level offering with a simple but good construction and in-house connectors. These would be in the affordable category and have served as a simple yet natural sounding approach.

Reading around the web recently on some new ideas about ICs, I ran into DIY techniques talking about different braided geometries as well as how good the KLE brand connectors are —and why. So I was excited to see that Hapa Audio was just launched and using some interesting geometries along with the minimal contact approach KLE connectors. And even more excited when I then saw a tour offer still with a spot open for me!

Poised for a source upgrade but currently using a PS Audio PWT Transport and a tweaked AppleTV and iFI SPDIF iPurifier for casual app streaming into either a Bricasti M3 DAC or Lampizator Atlantic DAC > Herron VTSP-360 preamp > Wells Audio Innamorata Signature amp > Harbeth 40.2 40th Anniversary edition speakers. Room is well treated and ‘tuned’ by ear with lots of trials of different treatments.

I used the three sets of ICs between both DACs to preamp and from preamp to amp. Since I consistently experience a distinct settling period of somewhere under 48 hours every time I swap an IC or power cable, that consistently gives a ‘false positive’ behavior for that time, I do not evaluate for two full days. Since, generally, with cables we are fine-tuning our systems to our liking, I find it impossible to judge something that is actively making finer changes in presentation during that time. Hell, I can move or jostle (not unplug) an IC or PC and get a presentation shift for a handful of hours. So for me -my ears and this system- and piece of mind, I need things to be settle and not moved for the two days before I get down to it... Unfortunately, after that, my demo time with the cables was also interrupted by a heavy rain storm and two separate multi-hour power outages. But I was still able to get in just enough listening to know; good thing my timing with them was ending on a weekend, so I was able to squeak out another day and a half :)

Don’t you love it when reviews are all build up and lite on descriptions of sound? Luckily I’m just adding to the bunch here and reinforcing what others have already said.

The first thing I noticed about the Hapa Breathe C cables was their clarity and lack of distortions. Like two months ago, when I added the Puritan 156 power conditioner to the system and saw the noisefloor drop and a new level of clarity and detail come through, the same happened again here with the Hapa cables; showing me just how much distortion my current cables have. The old saying “you don’t know it’s there until it’s gone’ fits here almost just as much as it did with the Puritan, in my case.
Next was noticing the openness and transparency, yet these cables still have great tonal color showing through and an ease and musicality that was a joy to hear. With my amp and speakers, I always wondered why I wasn’t getting the delicacy and ease that I thought I should have; it’s there now with the Hapa copper cables! But the most surprising change for my current system atmosphere and issues, was the bass. There are two distinct placement methods that work for the big Harbeths and I had been trying to get dialed in on the more conventional / more widely used placement of these speakers —over what I’ve used for them the past two years that I liked very much— but had yet to find the same top-to-bottom bass smoothness as before and rid the sound of this certain bass bloat/distortion, that I thought was obviously placement related. To my surprise, with the Hapa cables, that problem is no more. The bass is definitely still all there and articulate, yet lacking in distortions, that can evidently just seem like a bigger amount of a fat/rounded bass.
And like others have said, this level of clarity and cleanliness allows me to listen louder than before, if I chose to, without ‘setting off’ my sensitive ears.

These interconnects are so clean, clear, transparent and seemingly distortion-free, as well as still having great natural tone, timbre and texture, that I have placed an order to wire my system up with them, including the upgrade to the Absolute Harmony connectors that I am already familiar with and know they will bring everything up to just the right balance I’m after.

First off I wanted to say two things. Thank you to everyone who made this tour possible. I know coordinating this turned out to be a fun week for everyone who had the chance to demo these cables. Secondly I wanted to give a spoiler in that I freaking loved these cables. Now let me tell you why.

I have a very basic system built in a small spare bedroom with music as first fun priority, but also movie nights and video games as well. I make OK money and I have a bunch of other hobbies like motocross, mountain bikes, wakeboarding, etc. So needless to say my audio system gets some love and updates where I can, but it is modest by all accounts. I do quite enjoy tinkering with it in pursuit of better sound. The current system is as follows:

Thorens TD-190 with an Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge
Project Tube Box S2 with upgraded Gold Lion tubes and upgraded linear power supply.
Gaming PC w/ EVGA sound card & upgraded op-amp
Pioneer Elite receiver
Klipsch reference premier surround sound
SVS SB2000 sub
DIY braided bi-wire speaker cables with KLE banana plugs
Blue Jeans LC-1 RCA cables throughout
Some DIY room treatments
Typical room furnishings
Room is 12wx10lx8h.

Now that we have system introductions over, I will say that these cables made the biggest sound improvement since adding a phono preamp. I simply could not believe the difference. The fact that they made such an improvement in sound has placed a few other upgrades on the back burner and these will be high on the list here this year. In my system, they made such a marked improvement compared to spending $500 more on speakers, or preamp, cartridge or even a DAC that outside of the turntable I already have on backorder, these are next in line.

They were sent in a very nicely designed box but also the nice little cloth bag for extra protection which is cool to see small manufacturers still putting out for packaging. Nice touches. Also like most other reviewers, I could not believe how light and nimble they were. But enough about packaging and anesthetics, how do they sound?! As soon as I plugged them in, I was too impatient to wait the recommended 8hrs settling time. I had to see what these things were all about. Immediately I was let in to a completely different listening space that couldn't be my own. I had never heard music like this before from my setup. The clarity was unreal. The texture was palpable. It was as if I moved my couch into the band's practice space and getting a private concert all for myself. My face literally hurt that first night from smiling so much. I decided I needed to let the initial shock wear off and come back to properly listen, so I left it at that after an hour of listening and finally went to bed that night.

Day two I picked out a starting point and would just let the music playlist take its course. So I popped on Alice In Chains - Unplugged on vinyl. I love this album. Really, who couldn't love this album? It is one of the single best recorded live shows of all time. Right away I noticed the vocals were placed front and center and a bit more forward than before. I had to double check that my center channel wasn't actually playing. This was actually a good thing because it placed everything in line with the soundstage and gave it all so much more depth. Secondly I noticed the clarity of the drumming just came to life on "Frogs". Light cymbal taps were easily distinguishable between each tap when I previously thought he had been laying low in a lot of sections. That was new! I was wanting to stick with drumming so next I switched to Buddy Rich & Max Roach - Rich Versus Roach (16/44 Flac). Some quintessential jazz drumming was in order. Oh man was that a good choice. The drumming on this album has always been front of the stage, but this was on another level. On "The Casbah" the soundstaging was on another level. A seemingly perfect amount of crossover where Buddy Rich's set playing on the left side had just the perfect amount picked up by the mic on the right side of the stage. Wow, how had I never noticed that before? Next track was "Sleep" and the brush work was absolutely unbelievable. The texture snapping and swooshing about was easily on another level than I had ever heard. The snares snapped to life on command with Rich's typical authority behind the set, but hearing the smooth rustling of anticipation from Roach laying back on the right side was the stand out jawdropper. Next up I wanted to kick it up a notch so I put on Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic (16/44 Flac).

By this time I started to notice these cables certainly changed the sonic signature of my stereo compared to my BJC. These were smooth, detailed and absolutely zero harshness which is something to be said for pairing with Klipsch. I was noticing the bass was a bit smoother and highs were controlled. Not lacking by any means, but not with the hard hit as my other cables. Blue Jeans cables as everyone knows are solid core copper in PE with a copper braid shield and a heavy jacket for protection. Inexpensive and they pack a punch which does make them a popular option amongst the budget conscious crowd, but are not the end-all in resolution or smoothness. The best analogy I could think of would be cars I have driven. My current Blue Jeans cables are like driving a C4 Corvette. Loud, pretty fun to do burnouts and fairly cheap to pick up from the classified ads. The Hapa cables are not a C4 Corvette, but are every bit a V12 Jaguar. They are not in your face loud like a Corvette, overly pretentious like a Ferrari or over engineered and analytical like a Nissan GTR. They have style and poise like the Jaguar with every bit of smooth swell of power that will blast off like a NASA rocket but still be comfortable and effortless to drive with 2 fingers on the wheel at 120mph in smooth silence and comfort.

After making this realization, I didn't care one bit that the bass was a touch smoother by comparison. In fact, I really enjoyed it because it allowed the texture and definition to be much more prominent all the way through rather than just muddy, boomy slam below 50hz. The same was true for the highs as well. Gone was the shrill sharpness of a ringing ride cymbal, but what was there was the texture of each tap of the drum stick, pluck of a guitar string and inhale of the singer. I went about trying to listen as much variety of music as possible that week to as many different albums both digital and lps. From punk rock to jazz to reggae to symphony and everything in between, it was like rediscovering my entire collection again. As with everything in life, all good things must come to an end. At the end of my week, I very reluctantly unplugged those beautiful purple and blue cables, boxed them back up in their sack, and sent them back home. For now.

Hey everyone, I just wanted you all to know, the cables have made there way back to me and are awaiting the 2 giveaways! Our first winner has been sent his cable already.

What does this all mean to you? It means you still have time to enter the 'I'm in' contest, simply by posting anything, no matter how inane or ridiculous, to this topic to enter! We are giving away 1 pair of tour Breathe C 1 meter pairs to 2 randomly selected posters. Posts must be received by Thursday the 15th 9 pm Mountain standard time or you will be banished to the low-fi section of the classifieds FOREVER. One entry per person please. Friday I will announce the winners for the East coast and West coast tours (1 2 meter pair of Breathe Cs per coast) and the 'I'm in' contestants.

Good luck, based on the reviews I've seen, you might want to jump in!

LOOK AT MY DOG. Her name is Bella and she's a 6 month old Siberian Husky, as sweet a dog as I've ever known. I took this picture yesterday on our daily walk here in Seattle, and she serves as my "I'm in" to the contest for the cables, thanks for your consideration.

I’m a little late with this review - it was a busy week.  Anyway, I wanted to see how the Breathe Cs would fare against my older Grover Ss, specifically on the analog side of my system.  That would be a TTWeights GEM rim drive table with a modified Jelco 12 inch 750.  A VDH Colibri XGP is mounted on the arm.  That is connected through an Audio Sensibilities phone cable to a Choir Audio SUT (Hashimoto H3s), then through a Grover to a Herron VTPH, continuing on through another Grover to a Vinnie Rossi Lio (DHT, Shuguang Treasure 2A3s or 300Bs).  A pair of VMPS RM30s (external crossover, Powered Bass) are lashed to the Lio through a pair of Wywires Silver bi-wires.  The bass amps are connected via another set of Grovers.  Power cords are by Black Sand.  I replaced the Herron to Lio line and the cables going to the bass amps.  I tried to do the SUT to Herron, but the SUT uses WBT Nextgens and I couldn’t mate the KLEs without getting hum.  Rotating the plug didn’t fix it, so I gave up.

I was limited in my review time, so I focused on 4 albums:

Oregon – In Performance:  I’ve been an Oregon fan since the mid 70’s, I have the whole catalog, and this is probably my favorite.  The second album opens with George Schutz introducing the band at Carnegie Hall.  The ambiance surrounding his voice is a good test- the Breathes opened up more than the Grovers (which aren’t bad to begin with.)  This is followed by a Colin Wallcott drum solo.  The Breathes staged better than the Grovers and were slightly sharper on the cymbal strikes.  Moore’s bass sounded deeper and I think Mcandless’ woodwinds had greater color, nuttier, to use one of Pearson’s descriptors.  When the band is full out, everything stays together and separate, with no image wander.

Pat Metheny Group – Travels:  Part of this was recorded at the Philly Academy of Music.  He did 2 shows; I was at one of them, so I might be part of the crowd noise.  What struck me with this recording was the separation between the players, and specifically Vasconselos’s berimbau, which seemed to pull out of the mix, making it easer to follow his playing.

Sheffield Leinsdorf Firebird / Faun: I chose the Sheffields for classical pieces for their simple miking and the dry acoustic of MGM.  With Faun the woodwinds were striking, sounding very close to live. The Firebird came alive, with better definition to the drums, especially the bass drum, which sounded like it gained additional power on the low end.

Sheffield Leinsdorf Prokofiev:  Again, bass sounded more extended and strings were ummm “silkier”.  I noticed high percussion (cymbals, bells, …) were better resolved.  I also noticed more space between the players, each one individualized.

Overall, the Breathes are quieter and more extended than the Grovers.  They resolve space and individual contributions better.  Others have covered the workmanship and flexibility of the cables; I can’t add anymore.  All I can say is great job Jason, I’d love to hear the Quiescence series.

Bobrex, really happy to hear that the cables rocked it in your setup! I'm a big fan of Mr Rossi's equipment and overall design philosophy. Really superb setup! Another one I would love to hear some day! Thanks for taking the time to post your impressions. I'm bummed that rotating the barrel didn't fix the issue. I might have to do a special thread for this particular incompatibility issue with the WBT NexGen female connectors. It can be overcome, but it might require a bit of precision barrel rolling on the part of the end user. Any way, I've made note of it and will get something put together.  :thumb:

With that, that is the official end to the tour.

I will be doing the drawing for both east and west coast in about an hour and posting the results here. The winners will receive one pair of the 2 meter Breathe Cs that were making the rounds. I will be using the www.random.org to select the winner based on the order as follows:

East coast list:
1. Robert A
2. Don F
3. Todd C
4. Jason R
5. Bob R

West coast list:
1. Ron W
2. Mick W
3. Ben C
4. Charles M
5. Lloyd S

The 'I'm in' tour will include all non-tour folks who have posted above this post. I'll aggregate the list later on today and the drawing will occur today as well.  :thumb:

Good luck to everyone!

I'm the east coast Winner. Thank you so much Pez(Jason).. I feel I was the bigger winner when I bought your cable and it improved my system so much. This cable I will give to my friend. I'm generally a naturally unlucky person. I have a nice home ; beautiful wife ; family and some awesome friends that I'm greatly for.  I've  met some great caring people in this audiophile community who generally are unselfish . But I'm
so grateful that I won. If Axpona ever comes into fruition(I live near Chicago) I hope you AC-er's could down that weekend (Halloween) and we could get together to meet.
