Cable Risers
« on: 9 Mar 2024, 02:51 am »
Found out about these over on the DecWare Forums.

https://www.lirecordcare.com/shop-1

I got the 10 pack: https://www.lirecordcare.com/product-page/suspension-cable-elevators-set-of-10

They are quite good!

I need another 10.

Wow, very reasonable prices thank you for sharing. I used rebar trees with fancy wooden close pins.

Seriously, what is this evil effect that carpet has on signals in cables?   And what is the audible effect?

Static electricity and the carpet acting as a dielectric.

We've all seen the potential for static charges to build up on a carpet. You end up with a DC charge of variable strength along the length of the cable lying in the carpet.

Carpet also acts as a dielectric. As the signal propagates down the cable, the radial component interacts with the dielectric covering over the wire. Carpeting adds to, or extends the dielectric, changing the designed behavior of the cable.

Whether or not this affects a specific cable, carpet, system, and listener combination isn't going to be knowable without listening. And many will cling to the pseudoscience that it doesn't matter and it's all in the listener's head.

A couple other reasons for cable risers are to keep the cables organized and keep signal cables away from power cables.

Only two reasons that I can think of:
1] To make it easier for the housekeeping staff to vacuum.
2] To prevent the cable label dye from staining the white carpet.

My speaker wires cross some other signal wires, was the primary reason, I do not know if it makes a difference, but I gave it a shot. It was a fun DIY project that kept my brain going while I was waiting to do other projects. It is on carpet, but again I did not A/B as I do not have golden ears.

One would think that with all of the shielding and insulation of wires inside a cable the size of a garden hose that "cable lifters" would be superfluous. Seems you see a lot of "cable lifters" for sale in the used category.

Years ago I used a dozen of porcelain coffee mugs to raise some cables, I was unable to listen any difference YMMV.

I have been 3D printing mine in whatever height or configuration needed.  This one has a pivoting top piece to match the angle of the cable since these particular cables are very stiff and don't like being told what to do.

No point debating the sonic merits of cable risers. They look cool. 'Nuf said.
