AKM factory in Japan burns down.
« on: 3 Nov 2020, 08:31 pm »
AKM, producer of the DAC and support chips many of us use, burned to the ground a few days ago.  This eliminates product from them for six months to a year.

Luckily we had a bit of inventory and found an additional supply on the web, but at about twenty times the normal price. This will keep us going for a while, but we will need to raise our DAC price by about $150 to cover the extra cost.

We can build five more before the price goes up.

Factory Rep says it will be at least a year before any more AKM DAC chips are available.

My EE is starting the necessary redesign immediately. There are other good candidates.

With the modular DAC design, it will be interesting to see if it will directly incorporate a different DAC board, or if a more extensive redesign will be required.

Hi Frank,

Can you provide an update on when the DAC redesign might be available?

Thanks!
