"To Leslie" is a small budget independent film that made it's world premiere at the March 2022 SXSW with positive reviews, went into limited theater release making only $27,322 at the box office, then moved to streaming and disappeared into obscurity.

Leslie (Andrea Riseborough) is an alcoholic, she has alienated everyone she knows including her son. We first see Leslie winning $190,000 in a lottery, our next image is Leslie being evicted from a seedy motel, broke and alone. She returns to her small Texas hometown where she finds out even her old friends won't take her in, they know her history and will have nothing to do with her. All she needs is one last chance. "To Leslie" also stars Allison Janney, Marc Maron and Stephen Root. The soundtrack is killer too.

Andrea Riseborough is fearless in her portrayal of Leslie. Very few actors completely disappear and inhabit their characters, Riseborough is one of them. Meryl Streep used to but now she it too famous to disappear, De Niro still can, Brando used to, Brad Pitt is always Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford is successfully playing two different characters in "1923" and "Shrinking," Viola Davis maybe but not in "The Woman King"- she gave it her all but I just didn't feel it, and neither did the Academy Award nominating committee.

Andrea Riseborough has been acting since 2005 and has many admirers. It is unusual, if not unheard of, for other actors to start a write-in campaign for competing actors to be included in the Academy Awards but this is what happened. The Academy was, and is still not pleased.

November 2022 - Charlize Theron hosts a screening of "To Leslie" and calls the movie “one of those film experiences that are becoming extinct, unfortunately.” People took notice.

January 2023 - Gwyneth Paltrow hosts a screening and posts about the movie on her Instagram grid. She calls the film “a masterpiece” and says Riseborough “should win every award there is and all the ones that haven’t been invented yet.” The same day, Edward Norton publishes a Twitter thread hailing Riseborough’s performance as “the most fully committed, emotionally deep … physically harrowing performance I’ve seen in a while.”

January 2023 - Oscar-nomination voting begins. The Hollywood Reporter takes notice of the star-led social-media campaign for the film, which has grown to include Susan Sarandon, Helen Hunt, Zooey Deschanel, Melanie Lynskey, Mira Sorvino, Constance Zimmer, Rosie O’Donnell, Minnie Driver, Alan Cumming, Daphne Zuniga, Tan France, Jenny McCarthy, Frances Fisher, Rosanna Arquette, Debra Winger, Patricia Clarkson, and Howard Stern.

January 2023 - The Twitter account @FilmUpdates begins keeping track of the celebrities who have lent their support to the film. Besides those previously mentioned, the list eventually includes Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Demi Moore, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bradley Whitford, Jane Fonda, Dulé Hill, Michelle Monaghan, Laura Dern, Greg Kinnear, Kate Winslet, Kim Basinger, and Amy Adams.

January 2023 - At the top of her Critics Choice speech, Cate Blanchett, Best Actress Academy Award nominee for "Tar," gives a shout out to Andrea Riseborough and says she is on her list of actresses who deserve the trophy.

January 31, 2023 - Academy CEO Bill Kramer issues a statement that says they will not be rescinding Riseborough’s nomination.

"To Leslie" is streaming on at least 5 platforms, check it out. I thought Cate Blanchett had the Best Actress Award all but wrapped up but after watching Andrea Riseborough I'm not so sure. Then again I have friends who found "Tar" too confusing and depressing, "To Leslie" is not a feel good film either so guessing it's Michelle Yeoh's turn to win.
