Does anyone use a tube amp of under 50 watts to power the Minis?
Thanks!!
-
Based on 15w and Mini's, it probably depends on how much below 50w and size of the room.

Good question ? Lonewolf may have heard these with lower amps, maybe he'll chime in.
-
I am particularly interested in pairing Minis with OTL designs. I currently have an Atma-Sphere S-30, the least powerful in the line. Room is only 13x15 or so...

I Know that these and all of Bob's speakers love power and do sound better with higher power amps

Steve (SAS Audio) had mine for a few weeks in his slightly larger room using his 25w amps and IIRC the combination worked well.
While I agree more power can be more better, IME in a smaller room lower power (25+w) tube amps can work.

Wolf, You out there?

I have used my KR Audio amp (http://www.kraudio.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=15%3Aantares-va320&catid=3&Itemid=6&lang=en)....20 watts...to power the Mini's...worked out OK in a small room (which I have).
The Mini's can handle whatever amp you have..their not afraid of power...

Did you hear Steve's 25 wpc amps? I'm seriously thinking about getting those or the 50wpc versions. Steve doesn't have any made at the moment and I'm trying to find someone local who can give an audition. I high pass my monitors and use subs so 25w would probably be sufficient. Were you able to crank them up to reference levels with 25w? Thanks!

I think I have heard every version of the SAS Audio P/P amps since 2004.

You will not be disappointed. :thumb:

Morton or try to talk Steve into bringing his up.

Didn't try reference levels. Bamberg 5s? The 50w ULs may work better.
Since you are not too far away Steve may be able to rewire if you get the 25w version (not sure if he is willing or how much it would cost/best to give him a call).

Well, now that I pulled the trigger on the Minis (thanks Todd!). I will report back on my amp experiences here. I have an Atma-Sphere S-30 in the house (though I need some more 6AS7s before I hook it up to the minis, the amp can play fewer pairs of power tubes for more efficient speakers), and some Emotiva BPA-1 amps bridgeable to mono blocks.
Otherwise it has been flea watt over here. Lin, don' think the Decware SE84B will be paired with these (but I will be hanging onto a high efficiency system).
Any amp pairing suggestions for SP Tech/Aether speakers are more than welcome.

I never went there either.

Place one of these ^ next to each ear.
Call this a headphone amp

Brilliant Lin.
Now where can I find a headphone band to hold their weight?

What do you think headphone stands are for?

Looking at the SP Tech owners list on this circle, it seems like folks are driving these with some pretty mean SS amps. Some Class D stuff seems really popular with them too. On the SS side, how many watts is ideal, any other particular specs I should be looking at in these amps. Coming from flea watt land, so this is new territory for me.

Wyred 4 Sound STI-1000 Integrated. Never heard this , but 570watts into 8 ohms should get you rollin. :thumb:
Todd

Yeah, Wyred is on my radar for sure.

We have heard various SPTech models w/ various DAC Cherry amps at many a rave, and I had them at my place for a few months - Always sang nicely and got the most from the bass.

-
Yeah, I wish the Cherrys were in my price range right now.
-
This is all you will need. 2 for mono work great with the Mini's. Trust me :thumb:

No doubt those would likely work great. Trick is finding something at a much lower price that would work...

They usually go for around 1400.00 used on Agon :thumb:
Ok I'll stop the teasing. Chris did that to me and I ended up buying the Butler. I had his for a few months before making the decision
-
Hey, keep em coming. It'll be a great help if/when I have a higher budget or for future buyers/current owners who have a larger budget.
-
Give Tommy at DAC a call. You can get a DAC4800A at a nice price right now. I think he also has some demo model Cherry Jr's and Cherrys. I use the 4800A with my Continuums and Minis and it sounds fantastic!
-
I got an email from Tommy, but not something I can afford at this time.

Well, amp auditions have begun and I think I got lucky with my first real try. After using some bridged Emotiva BPA-1s that weren't up to the speakers' demands, I tried out an Aragon 4004 that jackman brought down today. Probably shouldn't speak for other people, but heck I will anyway and jackman can correct me if he disagrees: We were both really impressed with the pairing. SP Minis became much more effortless, and my worries about the speakers being too bright or too bright with this amp melted away. Music was fuller, with better base and detail retrieval. And since jackman has left I have also addressed my other concern with these speakers: low level listening. Much much improved with the Aragon 4004. Many thanks to jackman for bringing it down. A good time was had by all (including the dog).

I'm going on 3 years with my Class D Channel Island amps. As I may have stated in another thread, they replaced a Pass Labs X250.5 without a hitch. They run about $1400 used for the D-200's, but I believe there's a 100 watt model that would be cheaper. They might work well with the Mini's. More power is always better though!

Beautiful finish on those Minis spence. I also read a great review of the MkII versions of those amps. I have always really liked CI Audio and Audio Alchemy stuff.

Don't think they're Mini's. Looks like the next step up
-
Feel free to speak for me! Your system sounded excellent, those Mini's are inapropriately named, there was nothing mini about the sound you were getting. I understand why there are so many loyal owners of SP Tech speakers. They are something special both sonically and visually.
Your system is very impressive and you have one of the nicest dogs I have ever met. She is an absolute sweetheart. Thanks again for the hospitality.
Jack

Yeah they did look a touch big...
-
OK folks you saw it here. I have been authorized to speak for jackman! Now the fun really begins. "Jackman says this..." jackman says that..." Oh the trouble I could start.
-
Yes, mine are 3.0's, but I was making more of a reference to the amps. I haven't heard the CI MK2's. I wonder if there's much difference?
