Title: DT1350 Beyerdynamic headphones ....I love new toys!
Post by: eclein on 12 Feb 2014, 07:57 pm
I got myself some new DT1350's today and have been listening since they came, these are extremely comfortable, 2.5 hours listening out of the box, no fatigue.
These babies came alive when I ran my nexus 7 through my Fiio 07 dac/amp. So far they are sounding better and better as they run in.
These are fun to listen with, I picked tunes I haven't heard in quite some time and everything I picked sounded wonderful.
They go low and then lower with complete control, it's great fun. The high end sparkles and Improves as they rack up more time it sounds like, how long do you think a good break in will take?

I got this around thanksgiving and thought they sounded good right out of the box but it keeps improving over the next 50 hours or so of burn in.  In my case, I thought the sound was a bit thicker at the beginning and gradually spread a bit thinner as sound stage expanded a bit with use.  I got the DT990 and DT880 at the same time to compare, and the DT1350 had a more dynamic mid range I thought which made it easier to gravitate towards.  Maybe it's because of the Tesla drivers that the other two lack.

At the end, it went back to big river because of its form factor.  My ears hurt after 30 mins.  It's not small enough to wear out or in office as I prefer ear buds (IEMs) for both applications.  And, they are not as comfy as over the ear phones that I use at home.  So, I ended up with a pair of JVC HAXFT90 for work and walking around and a pair of Audeze LCD2 for home.

I bought 2 of the 1350s at full MSRP, but got rid of both eventually because of comfort and bad sound quality due to lack of a bass seal with the stiff earpads. But based on the incredible difference the T51p earpads make (same headphone with different cable and tuning), I'll be getting a refresh 1350 pretty soon.

Judging by their looks, 1350 vs 51p, I think they appear to be exactly the same thing??  But, the 1350 is selling for much less dough.

The unit I have is outstanding, the bass and low end in general and how its precise and controlled is the best I've heard since my HE5-LE's.
These make me want to listen to all kinds of stuff from electronic to acoustic Jazz, Rock and Roll.....I was listening to Filter today and the kid on Short Bus is perfect....makes me smile.

I don't want to over do my thoughts but right now these are my favorite headphones, hands down!
Highly recommend them and at the price point they are going for its really a fantastic opportunity :icon_lol:.

I've been giving the Audezes a day or two of rest while I assess these facelifts for any differences. I ran them directly out of my Outlaw pre/pro's headphone jack while I was watching Ender's Game and I was very impressed. There is SOMETHING slightly different about the sonics vs the originals, but I cant' quite place my finger on it. It's very subtle, and it's for the better. I want to say they sound slightly less veiled, but I dont mean to imply that the originals sounded veiled...if that makes any sense. The low end effects were fantastic, as always, and dialogue was crystal clear. I definitely am able to notice the improvement in comfort over the originals, as well. I wear glasses, and that was one issue that became problematic with the originals when I had them on for an hour or more. But the running time for the movie was right at 2hrs and I had no issues at all this time. So these pads and/or headband have done their job...and the clamp is slightly less, as I mentioned already, so that comes into play, too.

If there are better headphones for a buck seventy-four, I don't know what they are....these are a steal at this price.

So I expected great things from the refresh version, with ear-conforming pads, but reading here that the sound is nearly identical is very disappointing.
Dale where have either of us said the sound was disappointing? I haven't read anything that even remotely suggests that in any of Zepps posts. Personally I think these are fabulous.....Dale I'm curious why all along the way here after we post something positive about these 1350's you post some kind of negative, or basically restate the same negative. I'm sorry you had a bad experience but your reviews of spoken positively about the 1350's haven't they?

Dale: From what you're saying, you never really even got to experience the true sound of the 1350s since you had problems getting a seal on the original pads. There is very little sound difference for me because I *love* the original 1350s. I've used them nearly every day for the past two years and they go with me wherever I go. So to me, the fact that there is very little change in the sound was a relief...mainly because I already felt they sounded fantastic.

If the new ear pads allow you get a better fit than you did before, you may find there is a major difference in how the sound, you know?

In my case, comfort.. haha.

Yep, that would have been the only thing I wanted, too...so far the new ones have addressed that, so hopefully anyone who had comfort issues before will give these a fresh listen. When properly seated on the ears, they really do sound great.

I was struck by how good the measurements look in this set of graphs, particularly the square wave and impulse response, compared to other headphones–even some of the best:

Viggen I'm sure you've tried this and if you haven't and still have the phones make sure you open up the split headband. I have the leading half between my ears and eyes and the back half behind the peak/crown of my skull and the pressure really is lessened. Mine are open maybe as much as 4-5inches roughly I would guess....just a thought.

It's funny cause Tyll and I usually have very different taste in headphones. He's never been a fan of the brands that have traditionally been my two favorites - Grado and Beyerdynamic. So when he not only raved about the 1350s but - at the time - considered them the best sealed on-ears he'd EVER heard, I assumed that I probably wouldn't like 'em. The last time I had taken his advice was with the Phillips Downtowns, and I got burned big time...I hated nearly everything about them, yet he has them on his wall of fame. So it was much to my surprise when I fell as much in love with the little Beyers as he did. I think it's pretty much the only headphone that he and I have both loved, although he's also now very fond of the LCD-X...so I guess that makes two.

Yup, what he said....

eclein...congrats on the new toy!

The 1350's are amazing.

Each and every time I listen I am amazed at how good they sound for their small size...really a neat engineering marvel.

Tyell in a new review thinks that the  Senn Amperiors, Aluminum cans are better...but on another site there are several
people that disagree and I am one of them!

I contacted Beyer a few months ago and asked them what they had that has the same type of accurate bass etc that would have a larger soundstage, they suggested the DT880's etc or T90's...

I got the T90s and they are excellent but still very different than the 1350s.

They are my (2) favorites.

Ed, I did the same.  If i remember correctly, I preferred to first tilt the phones frontwards as much as possible with the front band then pulling the rear band as back as possible.  It's ok comfortable for a time, but the clamp pressure is just too high and the contact points are right ON my ears instead of around it which I know is by design.  I even left the phones clamped to a basketball for 48 hours.  It helped it bit.

Hey Viggen you tried.....bummer.

adydula: "Tyell in a new review thinks that the  Senn Amperiors, Aluminum cans are better...but on another site there are several

I have Amperiors, got them last year instead of the 1350's because zepp had those and I wanted to try something different so we could all get info about different cans. I like the Amperiors but I like the DT1350 better because the quality of the low end presentation is superior in my mind. I'll do a straight up A-B session in awhile and really dig in. I also read a similar article but I understood the writer as saying the new Senn HD-25II (a metal cup looks identical to Amperior) was superior. They are a special edition for some anniversary......I'm not sure if its HD-25I or II or something else but I seem to remember the number I wrote there. I could be wrong, I was a musician, progressive jazz and all....I have killed some brain cells preparing for gigs.....LOL.....either way these 1350's are special, Ive never heard low end done perfect before.

How do we Germans do it.......lol

For any Canadians interested in these, I just bought a pair from NCIX for the equivalent of $170 USD. No import hassles and $8 shipping sweetened the deal, and they state right on the page that they are the new facelift model (under "specifications"):
http://products.ncix.com/detail/beyerdynamic-dt1350-cc-tesla-technology-c2-91799-1374.htm
This does seem to be the coiled cable version, but I can handle that, although I would have preferred a straight cable.

I am intrigued with the DT1350's.  I currently am using the ATH-M50's.  I only use my phones for late night listening with my I-phone or I plug it into my Marantz receiver when I want to watch late night TV or a movie.

I need another pair of closed cans so both my wife and I can watch TV or a movie without bothering her 83 year old Father as he is usually in bed by 8 pm.

I had really decided to buy the NAD Viso HP50's which run $250.  The guy on InnerFidelity loves these phones and they seem to get pretty good reviews across the board.

Has anyone tried the HP50's AND the DT1350's as to shed some light on how these two might compare?

Both phones are close enough in price that the price difference is not a factor in my decision.

Regards,

Randy

When you get a chance, post your opinion. Mine just arrived in the mail and I'm thinking they might need a few hours to open up. Lots of bass and good isolation.

Mine are still breaking in, I do remember about an hour in from being new they sounded perfect and then a little bit later got scary kinda crappy. I've been using these everyday for 2-3 hours maybe and they are starting to smooth out now...which is 7-8 days in so do not fret..YET!!!!   Lol.......

I remember when I first got my Virtue amp thinking after day one that I made a huge mistake, by the next day at approx. 24 hours later saying "WOW!!!! I love this thing!!!".
I still have it and just finished listening to my main rig in fact.....I firmly believe in break in time.....

My 1350 just totally fell apart today. I was opening the split headband and the spot/button where all the parts come together and connect to the stem that holds the earcup sorta exploded. The silver button looking thing is a silver ring with the middle part/disk that has the rivet kinda looking thing (that's not visible) just failed and the three parts sprang open :slap:....LOL.....my birthday is 26th Wednesday, and these were my present to me.  :violin:
Amazon has returns/exchanges set up so efficiently that within a matter of minutes a replacement order was placed (due the 27th-OH YEAH!!!)  :banana piano: :drums: :guitar:

Title: Re: DT1350 Beyerdynamic headphones ....I love new toys!
Post by: ajzepp on 28 Feb 2014, 01:35 pm
Neither obvious nor patent. The earpads changed and now (with EQ) the headphone is usable. In fact the DT1350 EQ's better than the T51p, since the worst feature of the 1350 is the 8 db lower mids emphasis, while the 15 db emphasis in the T51p's treble is a screamer and can't be fully compensated - not without creating side effects.

Why in the world would you want a headphone that is "usable"? If I ever found myself describing a headphone as you have with these, "Unfortunately the sound is far worse than the previous 1350, and while EQ will help, it's so far off from neutral the best I can hope for is 'good but not great'. The new sound is very dark, very hollow, and weak in the bass." I wouldn't be able to get rid of them quickly enough!

And these headphones are the exact opposite of "weak in the bass"...I don't know if your head is just a bad match for these or what, but I get plenty of thump and nice clean sub-bass on both my pairs.

If I could return them, I probably would, but I bought them used. Even though I prefer the sound of my other phones, the Beyers are better in other ways... build quality for sure. The Sony's are pretty wretched in this regard. If I move my head around, that puts strain on the plastic headband which is annoyingly audible, even at moderate volumes. The Beyers are also much smaller, so that can be an advantage.

Another one of the defining differences is they are closed design whereas my other phones open. I guess I am partial to that. But having better acquainted myself with the Beyer's, I have to say I prefer the overall warmer tone of the Sony's. It wouldn't surprise me if someone else much preferred the tone of the Beyers. There's no objectively right or wrong answer here. Just preferences--and there's no accounting for taste.

Hi Dale:

Where are your headphone reviews?

WindChaser:

Guess I'll just have to buy your 1350s like I do with all your other discarded gear.

You should state what model your Sony's are and that they do not retail for $30.00 but were over $100.00 until cleared out at $30.00.

The bass on the pre-refresh has major problems because of the earpad seal (but it may work for some people).

Other than that, when you find the perfect headphone you just let me know.  In the meantime I will fulfill my responsibility to report all of the warts with this headphone (review pending). Other than that, it would just be a chat forum, yes?

EDIT: Click refresh on that EQ curve - I changed 40 hz to zero and 110 hz to minus 3. Good EQ, if there is such a thing, is an iterative process.

EDIT #2: Selecting a headphone isn't just about finding something that sounds arbitrarily good on my favorite music tracks. It's also about the learning and growing process - learning about the various aspects of high fidelity and how it relates to reproducing imperfect music recordings. Then finding a headphone that's usable to achieve whatever goals I may set in that learning process.

I'm not sure you really answered my question, but...carry on!

So, can anyone confirm that there is some indication on the box or otherwise that you are getting the facelift version of the DT1350?
I just emailed Beyerdynamic in NY as to what serial number the facelift version starts at, but it's5:46pm NY time, so I don't expect I'll get a response until Monday.
From all this talk I don't think I want the older version of the 1350!

I just ordered the DT 1350 'Refresh' version, straight cable, from HiFiHeadphones. It will take about 12 days to ship across the pond, and then I'll be able to compare to the originals as well as the T51p version. Although, the T51p headband does not split, and its cable is dual entry.
I wonder why you are buying from HiFiHeadphones in England at £239 or $400 USD when they can be bought for half that here.

Looking at my box right now, I got the coiled cable version, the number to look for on the top of the box is the "article number" on the Beyer European site: Article Number: 703575. This is for the coiled cable version.

The uncoiled version is : Article Number: 702072

If your question indicated an interest in learning what I do, I'd be glad to give you an answer. Most users buy into the notion that their headphone sound is a matter of personal preference, but as a practical matter my personal preference isn't available, and the closest to it costs way too much and is too confining. But I think any reputable reviewer will tell you the same thing - they report it the way they hear it - they don't just refuse to review an item because it doesn't suit their preference.

I see. Yeah I usually take reviews with a grain of salt since quite often they differ from my own experiences. This is especially true of the 1350s since I've been using my pair nearly every day for two years and have a pretty good feel for them. Also don't really have much interest in EQ'ing, so theres that, as well.

I'm confused when you say you wouldn't "refuse to review an item", though...aren't you buying these headphones yourself?

I got mine a couple of days ago; serial #23099. The earpads were not identical with the T51P in the photo you linked to and so I pursued it with Peter at Beyerdynamic (see reply #59 above) who was helpful.
He said that all coiled cable versions were facelift, since none were made before.
Since mention was made of better head band padding on the facelift version, I think this is the easiest and surest way to differentiate: the head bands with the extra padding look different; the black rubbery padding holder goes completely around the head bands, whereas the earlier padding just clipped onto the edges and the metal of the head bands was visible from the outside. This makes it very easy to separate facelift from non-facelift.

As to the sound; I have burned mine in for around the Beyer-recommended 30 hours at high-ish levels with the earcups clamped on either side of a the metal case of a convenient piece of test equipment 4.25" wide. This seemed to improve sweetness north of, say, 1 kHz.
The sound, while not the most accurate in tonality through the midrange (bettered by my Etymotic ER4S) I find thoroughly enjoyable, nonetheless, and exceedingly useful in revealing flaws in my recordings, such as air conditioning noise, mic preamp hiss and distortion, without detracting from the enjoyment. Bass is fabulous, just as expected - extended and realistic; not bloated. For the first time I can hear the orchestral bass drum correctly in my recording of that 95 piece orchestra in Kiev, and I know what was done, EQ-wise, to that, so it is a reference for me.
A surprise was how comfortable they were right from the get go. My ears are large and my head is fairly big, so I was expecting difficulty in fitting but, splaying the headbands out, they fell right into place as though they were made for me. The headbands were so comfortable I had to check to see if they were actually touching my head or not (they were).

Two final big bonuses: the ambient sound rejection is superb and the carrying case is great - the airline plug adapter means you could take these instead of a 'phone with active noise cancellation and enjoy superior sound and the same degree of noise rejection, for about the same price, probably. Oh, and one final bonus; they are very easily driven, so work well off ordinary low-powered headphone amps. They play louder than my Sennheiser HD 201s, AKG 601s and Etymotic ER4S,  much louder than my Fostex T50RPs at the same volume setting, plus can handle more power, so they have a greater dynamic range, which I think is a critical aspect of their performance and makes for undistorted playback at elevated levels for home use, and further isolation potential for pro use.

In short, I really like them a lot, and they are immediately my favorite headphone of those mentioned, not to speak of my AKG K1000s.

A great design. Thanks, Beyerdynamic!

I'm keeping the two I have for the time being
So am I right about the headbands as an indicator of pre/post facelift? Does the latest pair you thought were pre-facelift have head bands that show metal on the outside and are the ones you just got different in that regard?

Great feedback, Russell...very closely resembles my own experience. These things are such a steal at their current price...enjoy!

Hey Russell that's a fantastic write up, very clear and concise without too, too, too much info. :thumb:
I use them with my other new toy the X3 and it drives them super nicely. Zepp told me to get some of these last year and
I chose Amperiors to try something different, I much prefer the 1350's sound and the low end and the way its controlled is the finest I've heard in maybe forever...love these things!!! Zepp was right I shoulda gotten them last year........better late then never I guess...enjoy!!!! :icon_lol:

Which U.S. Authorized Reseller has the new Facelift DT1350 available?

Thanks,

Mine followed your 392 units later. They are serial # 23491 - with a straight cable...

Anyhow, I've read the above several times and I still cannot determine if mine have
the facelift or not. So here's what they look like.

Oh btw, what is the difference in sound quality between the FL and non FL versions?

Windchaser; those are facelift. Look at the headband padding, then look at this. This is pre-facelift:

As to sound quality, apparently there was nothing done to anything but the headband, cable and earpad, but the softer earpad makes for a better seal and thus better bass.

All I know is the Peter at Beyerdynamics ( peter@beyerdynamic-usa.com) knew for sure that all the headphones going to NCIX in Canada, where I bought mine, were facelift. I don't know what his position is, but he probably would be a good source of information. They are probably closed for the weekend now, so that doesn't help much if you have an itchy trigger finger.
I do know the headphones pictured on Amazon are the facelift version, again, look at the head band.
Sorry, I had an answer for you 5 hours ago, but got distracted and didn't post.

thanks ajzepp & Russell.

I actually did email Peter but had not heard back.  I did check on Amazon but will check again paying close attention to the headbands.

Sure thing...based on the reviews at Amazon, they've been selling only the facelift since January, maybe even before. Let us know if you pick up a pair!

Have any of you guys bought the straight cable version of the new facelift version?  If so, what is the street price?  It seems they are less than the coiled version.

thanks,

Randy

I haven't read this thread for a few weeks, but here is the place I got my facelift 1350's from"

There is a photo of the cans here as well.

They are showing a price of $299 on the Razordog site. Others, like Amazon and B&H Photo sell them for $179. Is there a reason you went with Razordog?

I just looked on Amazon and they are $264 and $289 on the US site a few moments ago.

The t50ps are a lot less on Amazon.

When I purchased RazorDog was the only source that I knew for sure that had the new facelift versions.

I found the same thing, to my dismay. I had to return my pair to NCIX in Canada when I discovered the subtle sound of voice coil rub in the left transducer. A little more careful analysis with a swept mono sine wave uncovered a poor left/right tracking, too, evidenced by the signal veering strongly off to the left at high and low frequencies. The mid range stayed centered, though.
After I returned them for replacement (because I really do like the fundamental sound and the configuration is very hard to substitute with another brand or model) I found out that they were sold out of both versions of the 1350 - coiled and straight cord.
I accepted a refund, and now have to buy a pair through some US outlet. When I checked, I found to my disappointment that the selling price had risen $100, so I will wait for it to come back down.

I might take you up on this if I lived in the States; unfortunately I live in Victoria BC, Canada. This probably complicates things too much.

The box is small enough that it could go US mail, though, I think - which is much simpler and cheaper than UPS or Fedex as there is no malarkey with brokerage fees and the like. US post just links with Canada post and they bring it to your door. We should take this off line.

I guess you didn't pick up on the hint Ed gave earlier in the thread, but how bout if you post this stuff in the 1350 thread that you already started instead of continuing to hijack Ed's.

Instead of being so hostile why don't you tell the mods to move my post. That way you wouldn't be perceived as being so self-centered when you should focus on being helpful.

Wasn't meant to be hostile at all, Dale. I only just now saw that you already started a 1350 thread. Just lookin' out for my boy Edwardo.

Well I tried, but I've given up. Now I have a better idea as to what I want in a headphone... open back fitting over the ear with a long cable so I can sit in my big comfortable chair across the room. In any case, if anyone is interested, mine are up for grabs posted in the classifieds...

Well.....I have had these 1350's now for almost 5 years!!!

They have been sitting here mostly unused for years as other Beyers, LCD. Grados have come thru the door...

So tonight for some reason I said "hey self..you never have tried these 80 ohm cans with your Bottlehead Mainline!:...."

So here I am listening with themonce again and boy what a nice homecoming!

They are working so very well with the Mainline on low impedance setting....

Wow the bass from these "tiny" things are just awesome.

Here is a review from the wayback machine:

https://kenrockwell.com/audio/beyer/dt-1350.htm#rex

Comparing these to HD 800's, Stax, and others!!!

Ha!

Great set of cans..

Here is a review from the wayback machine:

https://kenrockwell.com/audio/beyer/dt-1350.htm#rex

Ken Rockwell, like some others at the time, made the mistake of saying (in "Mechanical quality") that the ear cups were plastic. They are metal, which may be part of the reason for the great ambient sound isolation.
