Oh there is always a hope, if it were these new ones it would be very surprising indeed.

Every application is a bit unique, so the results will likely be also, but I used the Yugoslavian made Nationals in my Lazarus preamp for a long time.  Once those needed to be replaced I put in some JJ ECC803s, which I liked enough to use for a year or so, but never felt they had the same magic mids of the Nats.  I've since gone with the new issue Mullard CV4004 and have found those to be sweet and clear.

I tend to shy away from Chinese and Russian tubes because they lean so far toward the upper end. To me they're just irritating.
My favorite 12AX7s are:
Brit tubes include the Brimar CV4035s, 1961. Mullard CV4035s, 1957 Mitcham box plate, wrinkle glass.
German tubes are NOS Siemens-Rohre ECC83s
These all run black as night. Smooth with good bottom end.

Add to the Tele crowd (diamond bottom).
RCA and GE too.
Didn't like Amperex (Bugle Boy or Globe) and Sovtek.  Sovtek LPS are ok I think (haven't used on in a while).
JJs okay but sound a little thin to me.
So many NOS 12AX7 around no need to try new.

I read someplace that PS Vane 12AX7-S Art sound good but I haven't yet tried.
