Some ideas with media servers and player playback?
« on: 14 Dec 2009, 05:43 am »
I am so confused.  First I started working on a HTPC, which is very near completion.
Next, I bought a blu-ray player, because it was supposed to also play MKV (H264) files through the USB connection, and it would downstream Netflix via ethernet (this model does not have wifi, but I bought a Buffalo router, which I need to convert to DDWRT? to do that-another story), but the MKV files do not contain the subtitles, which I have to have.
So...then I buy a Western Digital Media Player Live because it is supposed to play nearly all files thrown at it.
Well, not true.  It did play the MkV files with Subs! But some simple AVI files it wouldn't play because it had Vorbis codecs in it as well.
Next up is playback of recorded tv files from my desktop.  I am using an AVer Media M780 HD card, which does an excellent job of tuning and recording the files.  They play fine on the computer, but when I try to play them on the WD Media Player, I get video, but no audio.
I have now noticed that it only plays correctly on my computer with Windows Media Player, not my preferred Media Player Classic, nor Nero
The properties are:
Audio Codec is
ffdshow and the Video is Nero DvD Decoder
It is in Mpeg format and is a movie clip.
As far as I know, I am recording through the Aver in MPEG-2 format.
Any ideas????

Install CCCP codec pack (after uninstalling everything you may have put on for codecs).

Check out J. River.

I'm not clear on why you would need a WD Media player and Blu-Ray (to stream Netflix) etc. if you have built an HTPC?

I use one master music server/HTPC and any PC can access the files via Library Server. I stream 1080P mkv over LAN with 6% cpu usage (probably should mention I can stream 24/96 FLAC over WAN to my office setup with Library Server too).

I have a WD Media Player for my in-laws house. Too bad some audio formats don't work; I'm investigating further.

Thanks for some ideas, CP
You said, "Install CCCP codec pack"
That is what I use all the time with Media Player Classic, but these video tv files have me flummoxed.
The blu-ray player just has the option to downstream Netflix.  I'll do that when I get back in the new year.
But the playback of those TV files...I downloaded MediaInfo, and it still didn't tell me where and what the audio was.  Then I tried playing the files with MPC, and didn't get video, just audio. And that said:
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch 384Kbps [AC3]

You probably need to play around with FFDShow Audio settings in CCCP section of start menu.

I have some AVis that won't play here; home movies from a Canon camera.

I think they may just be corrupted from a file deletion.

See if they play in J. River. You can configure directshow filters like in MPC.

Have never used J. River. I guess you are suggesting to download the trial player?
Will try more tomorrow.  Just beat from a day of teaching 8 year olds.

Thanks Dr. Cilantro, will try more tomorrow.

Won't have time to do anything until after work.
Ran the file through "Handbrake", and now the audio sounds like high squeaks, or fingernails across the blackboard.
Weird stuff.
