Hi,

One person from Spain with Audio Research LS17SE and Harbeth SHL5 (86 dB/W/m 6-8 Ohms) wants to buy a very good amplifier.

I have recommended him AVA Fet Valve 400R which I was about to buy a David Janszen speakers last year. Synergy? They will be XLR connected.

        FREQUENCY RESPONSE
+0-3dB, 0.5Hz to 200kHz at rated output (Balanced, 200k ohms load).

        DISTORTION
Less than .01% at 2V RMS BAL output.

        GAIN
Main output: 12dB Balanced output, 6dB SE output.  Tape output: 0dB (Processor input: 0dB SE output).

        INPUT IMPEDANCE
120K ohms Balanced, 60K ohms SE.  Inputs (7): CD, TUNER, VIDEO, PHONO, AUX 1, AUX 2, PROCESSOR.  (XLR and RCA connectors)

        OUTPUT IMPEDANCE
600 ohms Balanced, 300 ohms SE Main (2). 20K ohms minimum load and 2000pF maximum capacitance. Outputs (3): 2 main, 1 tape (XLR and RCA connectors).

        OUTPUT POLARITY
        Non-inverting.

        MAXIMUM INPUT
20V RMS BAL, 10V RMS SE.

        RATED OUTPUTS
2V RMS (1V RMS SE) into 200K ohm balanced load (maximum balanced output capability is 30V RMS at less than 0.5% THD at 1kHz).

Are there any compatibility issue? I am struck by the data of 2000pF, it is the first time I see specified.

Our Fet Valve 400R will be an easy load for your preamplifeir to drive and will have more than enough power and outstanding musicality for your fine Harbeth speakers.

The 400R is available with optional XLR input connections now ($200 for XLR inputs only, or $250 option with switchable single ended RCA inputs and balanced line XLR inputs.

Since your preamp appears to have both single ended and XLR outputs I would advice just using the single ended RCA input standard version of the 400R as the XLR option won't make the system sound better and will save you money.

It takes 2V to drive the 400R to full power and your preamp has 10V available single ended so there is no compatibility isssue.

Thanks for your interest.

Thank you Frank.

The idea: DAC (to buy), preamp and amp will be XLR connected. And certainly not tempted to spend much money on audiophile RCA cables  :P

Neutrik XLR connector with Van damme starquad XKE cable is my recommendation. I like very much the mechanical specifications:

They are cheap and very good/professional components.

Hi Frank

First of all excuse my bad English but I hope you can understand me.

I am the person to whom was referring maty possessing a preamplifier Audio Research LS17 SE and speakers Harbeth SHL5.

I am very interested in the amplifier Fer Valve 400R, but since I live in Spain and is more problematic have the option to return the 30 days offered by your company, I wonder if you think there is good synergy between my preamp and speakers and the amplifier 400R . For me it is important to obtain a natural and warm sound in voices. I know the Absolute Sound magazine in the review of the 600R, warned of the importance of the rest of the system to obtain a good result. Do you think would have much better results using a DAC with passive preamplifier?

On the other hand, I wonder if your amplifier is ready to operate in Spain and if the new option of RCA / XLR inputs is now available.
If I may buy an amplifier from Spain, does the warranty is still three years?

Sorry for so many questions, and thank you very much for your time.

Greetings from Alicante (Spain)
