I can't believe they left out Duke!  Boy would he be bitter over that or what?

Actually I stand corrected - the authors of the Penguin Guide to Jazz corrected this glaring omission in the 6th edition of their book and gave the The Duke at Fargo, 1940, the vaunted crown.

If you like stuff that really swings, try this...

"Basie Reunion"; Basie Reunion; Orignal Jazz Classics.

Basie style material by a bunch of old Basie hands and "new Basie afficionados who call themselves Basie Reunion - same as the CD title.

Terrific swing jazz and good CD quality too IMHO.

I just bought a Jazz collection at Costco that seems to have a lot of artists mentioned in Beboplive's post.  "The Very Best of the Jazz Giants" from Fantasy Inc. Special Products is a 3 CD set for $17.00.  It might be worth a try if you just want to get your feet wet.  That said, Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" is the highest rated CD in Zagats 100 greatest CD survey and should be in any serious jazz CD collection.

Lots of good stuff has been listed here!

I'll add

In a Silent Way - Miles Davis

IMHO, I  find this one of his most accessible recordings and a good intro to Miles as he transitions into the fusion of Bitch's Brew

Wow, I can't believe nobody mentioned Pat Metheny. Phenominal guitarist.

Here's a few of his best (he has over 40 releases out);

We Live Here
Imaginary Day
Still Life Talking
Speaking of Now
Beyond the Missouri Sky (with Charlie Hayden)

I'll second (and third) the Tord Gustavson Trio that HifiTommy recommended. And on that same genre of Jazz

Esbijorn Svensson Trio
Somewhere Else Before
A Strange Place For Snow

I'm actually driving to Chicago next Tuesday (11/9) to see these guys. I got 2 spare tickets, any takers?

When it comes to Count Basie
Chairman of the Board
Kansas City 6
Kansas City 7
Basie Jam

And for some Latin Jazz by Pancho Sanchez
Soul of the Conga
Latin Spirits

A bit of traditional
Art Blakie and the Jazz Messengers
Horice Silver
JJ Johnson and Kai Winding (dual trombone leads)

So much jazz....so little time

And I really like the Sonny Rollins I've heard- besides "Way Out West," what are his best albums from a sound quality standpoint? (I love good music, but I just can't listen to a horrid sounding recording no matter how good the music).

Rob, check out Sonny Rollins' "The Contemporary Leaders Plus".  There's some really good music on that disc, and sonics are good too (a bit too much stereo separation though).  For even better music and sonics that are not quite as good, I'd highly recommend "Plus Four" which has Clifford Brown on trumpet, Bud Powell's brother Richie on piano and Max Roach on drums.  That one's my favorite Sonny Rollins album of all.

Is this different from "The Contemporary Leaders"?  Or is it the same with maybe an extra track or two?  I just ordered "The Contemporary Leaders" on XRCD...

Hi,

I just checked out xrcd.net and it looks like the exact same thing.  I got my CD back in the late '80s or early '90s I think.  They may have added the "Plus" back then because of the added alternate takes.  These alternate takes are on the XRCD as well.
