James Joyce included a Daedalus character, later shortened to Dedalus, in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and in Ulysses. In recorded readings, Joyce can be heard pronouncing the name Daidalos
(Dh eh dh aa l aw s) in the Greek pronunciation. However, I had a professor who pronounced it Dee da lus
and he insisted that was the correct pronunciation.

I am with Kenneth on this one, dee-dal-us.  I think an Irish pronoiuciation of an ancient Greek word is getting us into deep waters.

Both pronunciations above are correct to my knowledge.

When I came up with the idea for the company in '92 I was struggling to find a name.  One night I had this dream where I just saw the name printed, I woke up, wrote it on the pad by the bed and the next morning looked it up. I had no idea how to pronounce it but a friend of mine with a PHD in english lit told me "dead ah lus".  My understanding is that is the proper 'English" pronunciation whereas "dea dah lus" is the American pronunciation.

I still like the name but I have had to spell it and correct pronunciation thousands  of times over the years... oh well.  :)

thanks,
lou

It's dead-ul-us, just like Lou says. I know this from watching the Mighty Hercules cartoon when I was a kid. Proof positive at 1:56!!! Case closed

BTW, Daedalus was the bad guy but Lou's speakers are excellent. Don't know how to work that out...
