Problem loading Volumio onto a Pi 4
« on: 1 Dec 2022, 03:57 pm »
I decided to try putting together a Pi music server. I have followed the instructions on transferring the Volumio for Pi download onto a formatted mini Memory card. This included unzipping the download and then transferring that to a the card with Balen Etcher. The card was inserted into the Pi and then the Pi was powered up.
I get a machine language black screen with white data in the upper left corner. The second screen has a enter log in. I have tried the default entry of Volumio and then hit enter. I then get Password. I try to enter it and I can't get it to accept any input.
I have tried this entire process several times with the same roadblock. What am I doing wrong?

In the past playing around with various SD cards and s/w like Volumio/Picore etc - I have found that issues are often related to the SD card itself and that trying another can help.

I don't recall entering any p/w for Volumio when I set it up last summer but the current release may be different.

I have tried two cards. Both are Scandisc and one new and the other one a month old. Did you get the black screen with white copy?

I likely won't be the ideal Admin to help with this - set it up last summer and am thrilled that it has all "just worked" since then.

I do recall using a browser to get into Volumio vs hooking up a monitor and trying to directly enter the Pi.

Assume this is what you're following to set it up - https://volumio.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Quick-Start-Guide-Volumio-1.pdf

It’s been awhile since I’ve used a micro usb card but I remember that problems are often related to the SD card formatting. I have always used SD Card Formatter: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/. Their website is quite informative as well as providing the free software.

Yes, I saw a recommendation for it and that is what I am using. I went to the Volumio website and the only help they offer is for the pay version.

Maybe try Moode Audio just to see if it is specific to Volumio or something on the hardware side (card, unusual Pi issue?).

https://moodeaudio.org/

I understand that you want to get Volumio working, but a similar alternative might help troubleshooting.

Also, are you able to login to your router to see if the Pi is acquiring an IP address on the network?

If so, you could try putting that IP address into your browser to see if Volumio is actually running.

(Maybe I'm getting it wrong and that is the screen, in your browser, where it's asking for your login?)

It sounds like you have a screen and keyboard connected directly to the Pi? If so, I believe the default username and password are "volumio" (No capitals).

However, what you probably want to be doing instead is connecting to the web interface (from a different computer). https://volumio.github.io/docs/User_Manual/Quick_Start_Guide.html

Thanks for the good suggestions. I will take time this weekend to try them and see if I can finally get a Pi music server.
