Stand-alone phono stage?

Dr. Lloyd,

Didn't you used to offer a stand-alone phono stage?

BTW, nice to see your new power supply with tube rectification and the Auricap option on the Ultra4m.

Phono 4 Phono Stage

Yes Brad, I did offer the Phono 4 but discontinued it as there didn't seem to be a big demand and the Ultra 4A offers the same phono circuitry with full line preamp features for not much more cost. The Phono 4 only provided 25 dB of gain so still required a line preamp to provide the extra gain required by most phono cartridges. The Ultra 4A has over 50 dB of phono gain and has been used successfully with high output MC cartridges (2 mV).

I can still make Phono 4 preamps for anyone interested in this option.

So that's 50 dB of gain, not including the gain from the preamp stage???

Phono gain of the Ultra 4A

The 50 dB includes the line stage at the output of the phono stage. It was intended with the stand-alone unit, that it would feed a line preamp with 20 dB or so gain but people seemed to want a phono preamp that could drive power amps through a passive control unit or directly. In any case, I can always offer the Ultra 4A (Phono 4A?) as a phono-only preamp with 50 dB gain, without any controls. Problem is, it isn't much costlier to add some line inputs and controls as in the Ultra 4A.
