in the sansui vein, you may want to consider the sp2500, (note the 98db/1w/1m efficiency):

http://www.classicsansui.net/Speakers.htm#SP2500

these, as well as the larger sp3000 & sp3500, are far better than the sansui's you linked...  i picked up my beat-up sp2500's on cl for $20, and they sound wery nice...  when used w/my deqx, (overkill, i know), they truly approach the sonics of my spendy speakers...

If you happen upon some Realistic Mach 1's, that might be a good choice too.  Obviously not a critical listening speaker, but you could melt some faces with them, and in a barn that's really what you need...facemelters.

When you say barn, I think very large area. If that is the case, why not look for some professional speakers with horns and giant woofers that can kick out the jams. You're not really seeking refinement, are you? Is this just for room fill or will you actually be sitting down to evaluate it?

for face melting & kicking out the jams, the sansui sp2500's i referenced, w/12" woofer, and 98db/1w/1m, are not too shabby...   8)

barn is 36x36 (height might be 16-18?)
room fill - not evaluation. never even sit down in there - just work.

speaker ports and edible parts (cones - so say the mice) will be wire meshed for protection.

How 'bout a quad of fifteens in a guitar cabinet with a coax in the middle hangin' from the rafters.  :icon_twisted:

How about something for $40/pair, the original price of the two candidates?

Well I could not zero in on a decent pair of JBLs or some of the other cool speakers suggested but I did end up with these HED (Cerwin Vega) 1230's (stock picture) from a local yard sale for $49 (refoamed). Would also have loved to have built something like a Pi 2, but reality set in - little money, even less free time. Will be driving them with Marantz 1530 (96dB; 30 wpc; 8 ohms).

Oh yeah. Facemelt City. Not done with rooms yet where receiver and player will live so just threw them up at end of barn for test run. "White Lightening" wires, Grand Funk Railroad cd ... sounds great ... freakin' loud. Will never come close to using all 30 watts.
