Dawn- Double Image (ECM).  Nothing like it and it never gets old.  It's that good but this group couldn't find a large enough audience to sustain it.   Unusual instrumentation is likely why.  I gots two copies.

This is a reprint of a note to my local audio society members that contains some music worth your time and effort:

"So, weekend before last my daughter and I venture out to Travis and Carolyn's place to get the lowdown on how to start a wildflower garden like she and Travis have done. She was very helpful, too, Naturally, I took a couple records for a much shorter visit to Travis' listening abode. After getting my sox blown off by a couple of up-tempo Jazz Crusaders' tunes I brought, I asked Travis to play a small gem of an analog recording made in Norway, Fairytales (ODIN Records) cause it's special. We only listened to the opening track, Nature Boy. Travis knew this tune well.  We also listened a Manitas de Plata record of mine recorded very live in the 60's at an abbey in Southern France.

So, today, I get a package in the mail from him containing a disc with 8 renditions of Nature Boy by the likes of Nat King Cole, Kurt Elling, Miles and Milt, Annie Selleck with Joey D(?) and others. Exceptional reach-out-and-touch-it sound on that last one. But, the best was yet to come. Also included was a disc of John Mills and Times Ten, Caffeine Dreams(?). Holy s___, this is some of the best big band jazz and recording quality ever to see the inside of my modest player and fill my room.

You are a fine dude, my friend, and a great listener. Thank you a ton for your imaginative thinking and the work it took. Very thoughtful of you and I am really enjoying it. You da man. jim"

I had previously never heard of those artists with a (?) behind their name but, damn, they are good and those recordings, whoa Nellie, those recordings are way past good.

originally recorded from 1962-1967

Looked for these guys on MOG. I didn't find this exact recording but I found some others done at the same period. I like these guys. Thanks for tip....

Arthur, you're a man after my own heart, but you gotta get this and that's comin from a devotee tho I am particular about the album (and the sound).  I checked Amazon and found three used-in excellent condition LP's from reputable sources at reasonable prices.  Don't know about CD's but you can check.  This collection of tunes and the group's playing of them is the best I've heard of the Jazz Crusaders since they arrived in L.A. and disbanded years later.  You must get this.  A word to the wise, turn this mother up so the front line on stage is reach-out-and-touch it:

I'm rather partial to The Emperor and their cover of Coltrane's Impressions which run back-to-back (there are only 6 tunes on it, it's a live album remember), still, after a lotta moons.  In case you can't make out the title, it is Live Sides from performances at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, L.A., a Blue Note Re-issue Series.   They were at their best with Buster Williams on bass as he is here.  His notes are money.

One thing I have noticed when looking for old recordings. Either the analog (vinyl) stuff or the digital offerings. Often there was more care and expertise taken with the actual original recording. Many here know this, but the difference between poorly recorded material and quality recorded material can make all the difference. It can turn you on to an artist or turn you off as well. That is a pity, since many jazz artists sound spectacular and many just poor..... often not easy on the ears.
