n3 drivers in ported enclosure?
« on: 27 Jan 2011, 01:26 am »
hello danny, i was corious to know how well the n3 driver combo would do in a ported enclosure. like this:

https://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=178_395&products_id=1684
the volume is 1.38 cubic feet. i was thinking i could add a 2 inch diameter port  with a 6 inch length and  call it done. thoughts?

It does give up some control and low end extension verses the transmission line design, but there are no issues with using it in a ported enclosure. The other drawback is that it is an inch wider so you wind up with some disruption to the response from added surface reflections.

I did do a design using one of those boxes last year. It was a 2.5 way design using the Neo 3 pdr and 2 M-165X woofers. The box was sealed. It sounded great but it was still 4db down in sensitivity from the N3 and didn't play as low, so I saw no sense in going further with it.
