Shopping for an automobile head unit
« on: 19 Apr 2011, 08:22 pm »
Hey all,
I'm looking for a head unit for my YukonXl, and was wanting some recommendations on where you're doing your shopping.

So far, I've checked:
- Best Buy
- Crutchfield
- SonicElectronix
- TigerDirect

Any other places you know of?

Thanks!  :thumb:

Also check Amazon.

I picked up a head unit, the wiring harness adapter, and the double din install bracket at Amazon and it came out to be the lowest price I could find.

In November of 10 I put a fully loaded Pioneer touchscreen navi head unit into my car.

I got a great price from Sonic Electronix. I don't know if I can post the link, so do a google search. They are authorized dealers for many items. I think I paid 900 something from its retail of 1500.

They weren't authorized retailers for the Pioneer, but offered their own two year warranty in case of failure. Unit was brand new and in perfect condition. It works perfectly and looks great.

Don't forget eBay.  Search for McIntosh car audio.  ;)

I LOVE my McIntosh amp in my truck!

I second the Amazon recommendation.  We just put a system in my sons S10 and all but one purchase was through Amazon, good pricing.

Best,

I've bought bought from Crutchfield several over the years. Nothing but great experiences with them.

I would stay away from a big chain store such as best buy.  They just don't carry solid equipment in general and if they do they want to charge huge sums of money.  You can find good deals on amazon as others have said.  There is also a site called caraudioclassifieds that has great opportunities to find new and used head units.  These days be wary because head units aren't made like they used to be.  A late 90's alpine, mcintosh, sony ES,or clarion dex will blow anything today away.  Bottom line, find out what you are going to require or the unit(ipod, multiple cd, eq adjustability) and narrow your list from there.
