Multi Speaker Demo 96kHz using Cherry Amps

Remember you saw it here first (:

!! MEANT TO BE HEARD ON HEADPHONES !!

This is an experiment we did to demonstrate the sonic differences between four speaker systems.  The recordings were done with binaural mics worn in my ears.

Please note: My ears loved the sound of the JTRs with my head back, but apparently, the mics didn't work as well that way, so the highs seem attenuated.  I can assure you the highs that I was hearing, even with mics in my ears, were not attenuated, and the sheer impact of the JTRs is something to behold.

Keep in mind the room acoustics are middle-of-the-road for "liveliness" and treatments are minimal.  There is a slight bass resonance that is minimized by speaker placement, but to be fair, we placed all the speakers in approximately the same place.

The original of this recording is in 96/24.  We realize that YouTube's compression may decrease audio quality.  This is the non-processed version.  We will publish a version with the slight background noise removed at a later date.

We all have different aspects of sound which grab us.  For me, its large scale spatial soundstage, tonality, bass/treble balance and no sibilance....and probably because I'm not listening much beyond 80/85db...slam and impact are not at the top of my list.

Listening to the youtube on both my laptop computer speakers and then connecting headphones, I much preferred the Dynaudios...the JTRs sounded almost hollow with an overemphasis of the top end and there was no sensation of "greater" impact...so maybe all the speakers deserve another go around with stereo mikes (not the inear binaural mikes) set up at the listening position...and then calibrated so the speakers are all within 1db or so.

On this video, the JTR's sound like speakers with tweeters blown and not functioning.
Needs another round of comparisons.

I don't have headphones, but from my PC (with a set of speakers and a sub hooked to it) the Dynaudio Sapphires sounded best, next was Magnepan, then Vandersteen, and lastly JTR. That's what I heard from listening to the demo.

So you know, if it were a competition, JTR would have been the overall winner simply because they offer amazing clarity (and the lowest measured THD I've seen from a speaker in my primary listening room so far), nearly unlimited power handling, bass down to 25Hz, punch-you-in-the-chest transients, and smooth/silky sound that comes right through with many recordings.  More on that below....

We're planning more of these in the future if people find it useful, but we'd like to include speakers from either Spatial, Tekton, Von S, or Zu next time around.  This video was surprisingly difficult to produce.

It looks like the JTR is a "controlled directivity" design which definitely has advantages from a reflection standpoint.  In my case, I have the Salk Veracity STs in a really large room so the wide dispersion of the RAAL tweeter is not an issue...and may be an advantage from the standpoint of yielding a really large soundstage....but definitely can not play at the levels of the JTR.  What is your experience with the type of soundstage the JTR produces?

As for clarity...I think of it in terms of do a piano, a trumpet, a plucked string, a voice sound tonally right and sound as if the person/instrument is there with no layers of fog...which the RAAL does really well...and it sound like the JTR is excellent also.

I like to hear the JTRs some day....but in reality, I don't want to deal with 125lbs speaker or speakers with no grills...but I have to say that I really like the 210 in Red.

The imaging from the 210s is spectacular, and with the max SPL so high, you can generate a “wall of sound” with the right amp (clean, high power)!  The 210s are rated at 95dB. The JTRs come with magnetically attaches grills, by the way.

It may have been that the taller speakers were picked up better by the microphone, that's why they seemed to sound better. What you reported about the JTR's was not what some of us were hearing. I love to do speaker comparisons, but I usually have to buy them to do that. I have about ten pairs now....

Good point.  This could also handicap the Vandersteen speakers, which weren’t on the stands in the video, by the way.  The bigger JTRs might do the trick (212s, 215s)  :P

We should do a video with your speakers!  What do you have?

Mine are mainly vintage. Two pairs of Infinity RS 2.5's, Infinity Quantum 2's, Infinity RS2's, Infinity RSM's, Von Schweikert VR-2000's, Carver AL III's, Klipsch KLF-20's, and JBL L166's. Most of these have been upgraded and/or modified in some way (always for the better). I have at least 4 other pairs of small speakers and a couple Velodyne subwoofers. We're planning on moving so I should be getting rid of some of my excess speakers and amplifiers.
Yes, the bigger JTR's may sound a lot different in the next recorded demo, if you have access to a pair.
