I've always gotten by with the best of SD.  I just picked up Aja 2 months ago and have Two against Nature.  What do you SD fans recommend for my next two discs?

Max,

Just go to Amazon and buy them all.  They're less than ten bucks each.  I envy you in a way because you are about to discover stuff that you've never heard that will delight the senses.  Lucky you.

For my money, The Royal Scam. Not their biggest hits necessarily, but some of their strongest musicianship. Really amazing stuff. First two songs are maybe my fave Dan tunes of all-time.

Side one

   1. "Kid Charlemagne" ? 4:38
          * Guitar solo by Larry Carlton
   2. "The Caves of Altamira" ? 3:33[1]
   3. "Don't Take Me Alive" ? 4:16
          * Guitar solo by Larry Carlton
   4. "Sign in Stranger" ? 4:23
          * Piano Solo by Paul Griffin
          * Guitar Solo by Elliot Randall
   5. "The Fez" (Becker, Fagen, Paul Griffin) ? 4:01
          * Guitar solo by Walter Becker

[edit] Side two

   6. "Green Earrings" ? 4:05
          * Guitar solos by Denny Dias (1st) and Elliot Randall (2nd)
   7. "Haitian Divorce" ? 5:51
          * Talk box guitar solo by Dean Parks, altered by Walter Becker
   8. "Everything You Did" ? 3:55
          * Guitar solo by Larry Carlton
   9. "The Royal Scam" ? 6:30

I can honestly say that there's not a single SD song that I don't like.  Timeless music played by great musicians.

Are you guys sure about SD.  I mean, the 72 release says you can't buy a thrill.  :P
ANyway, I'll start at the top and go down to the newer stuff.  Santa is going to have an easy year this time.  Thanks a bunch.

If you looked like Becker and Fagen in the early 70s you couldn't have bought a thrill either

That was their first album, they didn't have any money yet.
The money problem apparently didn't last long, notice the title of the second album.....Countdown to Ecstasy.

OK, it's just a different color then mine (probably from the touchier lights. That's a nice collection. I'd put Donald Fagen's Night Fly in there also. Then it would be super-duper.

Then I would have to include "11 Tracks of Whack"....ouch.

Gavin,

It does indeed sound like The Boys are listening to the issued multi-tracks of Peg. However, the studio playback is going through some sort of less than great ENG mic. A bit of info I came across re: the Cisco 180/200 Gram LP re-issue struck me as interesting (Well, interesting only as it serves this discussion). Becker, Fagen, and Elliot Scheiner all gave it The Stamp Of Approval. That has me thinking Aja hasn't gotten the SACD treatment yet because:

They've got other things they'd rather do. Or...

They still can't find the _original_ multi-tracks. Or...

They are going in the direction of some of the more recent Dan records and Fagen's Trilogy, and will have future re-issues come out as DVD-A (I hope that isn't happening). Or...

They don't want to do it on SACD (yet) because they are waiting for something "new" to happen with audio on Blu-Ray and/or are going through the same Bonus Material March that they would have to do for a DVD-A release.

As an aside, those blank spots next to Katy Lied and Gaucho leave you room for a still of the slate from the Record Plant in '74, and the cover art for the Rosie Vela record #8^)

..or 2 Against Nature and Everything Must Go.  I need LPs to get a reasonable cover shot with my Nikon rather than cds.  EMG LP is out there but at $35 I'm not willing...2AN isn't available on vinyl.  I suppose Nightfly and Kamakiriad could fill in the blanks....or something by Kenny G.

These are certainly the "Classic - Dan" covers. If you don't want to frame the new stuff I can understand that. But it the Alive in America cover is pretty cool, you've got to admit.

Hi Bob,

Yes I have Alive on cd.  Even saw that show when they toured back in '94(?).  The album cover is pretty cool but no LP.  I may try and see if I can shoot the CD cover with reasonable resolution.  However, I may fill the blanks with Nightfly and Kamakiriad....nothing by WB thank you :nono:

Kenny G? Ouch. Nightfly would look great. Did Becker's solo stuff come out on vinyl?

If it did, I'd be the last guy in line to buy it.  Not a big WB fan.

Doh. You mentioned WB earlier. I was stuck in Record Biz Mode, where WB = Warner Bros. I was thinking, "Wow, dude _really_ doesn't like the label. And didn't know they changed labels..."
